To present the design direction and technical framework of BMW M, the high-performance division of BMW used the 24 Hours of Le Mans event to unveil the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse.

The design study previews the division’s upcoming high-performance electric vehicles. It establishes a direct link between the brand’s historic motorsport elements and an upcoming production portfolio driven entirely by electric powertrains.

Aerodynamic efficiency dictates form
The exterior layout introduces a revised design language where aerodynamic efficiency dictates form. At the front, a forward-facing ‘shark nose’ layout integrates the headlights and the kidney grille into a single unified element.

The front bonnet features a prominent V-shaped air outlet designed specifically to assist with the cooling requirements of the electric powertrain components.

The lower sections of both the front and rear aprons employ a 3-part, trimaran-style bumper design, a shape borrowed from high-speed sailing vessels. This structural arrangement provides foundational anchor points for the front splitter. Aerodynamic stability at the rear axle is further managed by a floating diffuser and an integrated ducktail spoiler.

Lighting signatures on the concept serve both aesthetic and functional roles. The concept car introduces ‘M Yellow Lights’, a 3-dimensional light icon designed to reference GT racing machinery and the current BMW M Hybrid V8 prototype. These yellow light signatures are intended to become a standard identifying feature on future series-production M models.

Additionally, 3-dimensional Track Lights are embedded within the outer sections of the front bumper and frame the upper section of the rear diffuser.

Resource-efficient materials are used heavily throughout the construction. Structural and aerodynamic components — including the front splitter, rear diffuser, and bonnet air outlet — are manufactured from natural fibre elements. This material application extends to the roof graphic, which displays a refined finish incorporating M branding.

Strict focus on the driving environment
Inside, the cabin is configured with a strict focus on the driving environment. The interior architecture features four newly engineered bucket seats that utilize natural fibre elements within their core structures. The seats are wrapped in a 2-tone Merino leather finish of Bathurst Blue and Berry Red.

For the first time in an M-badged model, high-quality black nubuck leather is applied to structural touchpoints, including the steering wheel, door panels, and the integrated roll-bar.

Performance-oriented cockpit layout
The floating dashboard structure is upholstered in a black knit material and features hexagonal backlighting. Functional cabin highlights, such as the M gear selector, the steering wheel shift paddles, and specific graphic elements within the digital displays, are accented in red to maintain a performance-oriented cockpit layout.

New BMW M eDrive powertrain
Under the skin, the concept previews the technical capabilities of the upcoming BMW M eDrive powertrain architecture. Developed specifically for all-electric M applications, the system is based on the 6th-generation technology platform of the Neue Klasse.

It utilizes a total of 4 electric motors, with torque distribution and braking forces managed by a central high-performance computing unit dubbed ‘Heart of Joy’. This central software system handles wheel-specific control parameters to optimize traction and direct response, while also facilitating higher levels of energy recuperation.

The electrical architecture operates on an 800V system, drawing power from a high-voltage battery pack with an energy capacity exceeding 100 kWh. The battery utilizes optimized 6th-generation cylindrical cells designed to handle high energy throughput during rapid acceleration and high-rate charging cycles.

For added structural rigidity and improved handling dynamics, the high-voltage battery housing is physically integrated as a structural member of both the front and rear axle assemblies.
