GWM Malaysia reports strongest-ever first-half sales performance

GWM Malaysia reported its strongest-ever first-half sales performance since entering the local market over 3 years ago. During the first six months of 2026, the company delivered 3,166 vehicles – a 42.4% year-on-year growth compared to the 2,224 units recorded during the same period in H1 2025. This performance places GWM among the Top 11 bestselling automotive brands in Malaysia.

HAVAL H6 biggest contributor
Growth during the 6 months was contributed largely by the HAVAL H6 HEV, which is assembled locally. Evidence of the increasing popularity of this SUV can be seen in the 36.4% increase from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2026.

The WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, also assembled locally, maintained its position as Malaysia’s top-selling luxury MPV among officially distributed brands, with sales rising to 707 units in the second quarter 421 units in the first quarter. Meanwhile, demand for the fully electric ORA Good Cat nearly doubled, posting a 93% quarter-on-quarter sales growth.

According to Stan Li Hao, Managing Director of Commercial Operations at GWM Malaysia, the first-half figures reflect growing consumer confidence in the brand’s product offerings and long-term commitment to the market. “As we enter the second half of 2026, we remain focused on expanding our product portfolio, strengthening our presence in Malaysia and delivering even greater value to our customers,” he said.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, GWM Malaysia is preparing to introduce additional electrified models following their initial preview at KLIMS 2026. These are the ORA 5 HEV compact crossover and the HAVAL H7 Hi4 PHEV, alongside the TANK 300 HEV.

EV strategy
On the introduction of fully electric models in future, the company will wait till the end of 2027 before considering its future EV strategy. That’s when the tax-exemption on locally-assembled EVs is set to end, although the industry players have urged the government to extend the exemption.

“We will decide after the end of 2027, based on whatever policies the government will introduce for fully electric vehicles,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia. “Factors such as potential volume will be considered as we look at whether to assemble locally.”

Local assembly operations continue to form a core component of its long-term strategy. The HAVAL H6 HEV and WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV are not the only models that will be assembled locally (at the EP Manufacturing plant in Melaka). Other developments in local assembly are forthcoming and GWM Malaysia is also exporting the WEY G9.

GWM Malaysia also signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Touch ’n Go Sdn Bhd. Under this collaboration, all new GWM vehicles booked and registered from August 1, 2026 onwards in Peninsular Malaysia will come equipped with a pre-installed or bundled Touch ’n Go x GWM Branded RFID tag as standard equipment.

August/September promotions
To celebrate the upcoming Merdeka and Hari Malaysia, GWM Malaysia will run a nationwide customer campaign from August 1 to September 30, 2026. Customers who register a new GWM vehicle during this period will stand a chance to win one of six RM1,000 toll cashback rewards.

Additionally, there are also promotional savings of up to RM30,000 on selected models throughout August, accompanied by 5 years of free service maintenance on all new vehicle purchases.
