GWM Malaysia builds on strong 2025 performance

Quick look

  • GWM Malaysia continues from its strong 2025 performance and aims to grow further with new models in the range in 2026.

  • Network expansion and increasing aftersales outlets is a priority as the number of owners grows around Malaysia.

After a strong performance in 2025 with 177% growth over 2024, GWM Malaysia started 2026 with 1,294 vehicles delivered during the first quarter. While the initial months of the year saw a general moderation in buying activity (long festive holidays), the brand recorded a progressive improvement in sales that peaked in March as demand normalised.

While the broader car market shifted toward a more calculated pace, the current sales trajectory highlights a clear shift in local buyer preferences toward electrified powertrains, ie hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) systems.

Focus on PHEV/HEV
While GWM has a diverse range of products with various types of powertrains, it is currently focussing on HEVs and PHEVs which are making up the largest volume of sales. The two models which are selling in the biggest numbers are the HAVAL H6 HEV and WEY G9 PHEV. Both as assembled locally under contract at a plant in Melaka.

The WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV has notably established itself as a significant player in the high-end MPV space, representing the brand’s first local application of its intelligent hybrid energy management technology (Hi4).

The WEY G9 PHEV is assembled in Malaysia, with some of the production exported overseas.

In the SUV category, the HAVAL H6 HEV remains a primary volume driver for the company, carrying over its 2025 performance where it secured a nearly 15% share of the HEV segment. Its consistent popularity in the market suggests that mid-sized HEV SUVs are appreciated by Malaysian families looking for a balance of practicality and modern efficiency, especially in these times when fuel costs are rising.

GWM TANK 300 [2024]

The TANK sub-brand has focused on a different niche by targeting the lifestyle and off-road SUV markets. The TANK 300 is the entry model while the TANK 500 offers a ladder-frame SUV in the premium segment. These models are intended to diversify the brand’s image, moving it beyond purely urban applications and into more rugged, capability-focused roles.

Electric offerings too
GWM Malaysia nevertheless also supports the government’s objective of shifting Malaysians towards fully electric mobility. For those who are ready to change to the ‘electric life’, there are also fully electric models from the ORA range. Steady interest in GWM EVs indicates that Malaysians are coming to accept zero emission vehicles that are within an affordable price range.

Future growth for GWM Malaysia will be fuelled by the introduction of new models this year, such as the upcoming TANK 300 HEV. The public will have a preview of some of these models are the Penang Motor Show and KL International Mobility Show, as well as other events.

Continuing network expansion
Besides growing sales numbers, the company is also focusing on the expansion of its network to support the fast-growing number of HAVAL, WEY, TANK and ORA owners. As of April 2026, there are 39 showrooms across Malaysia, with a target to increase this number to 60 by the end of the year. This expansion is coupled with efforts to maintain high levels of spare parts availability.

Multi powertrain approach
The overall strategy for the remainder of the year involves a broad multi-powertrain approach that covers various price points and bodystyles. By maintaining a presence in the mass-market, premium, and electrified segments simultaneously, GWM Malaysia aims to shield itself from fluctuations in any single vehicle category. This diversification allows the manufacturer to remain flexible as national fuel policies and consumer trends continue to evolve throughout this year.

“While market conditions remain challenging, GWM Malaysia remains focused on delivering practical and reliable mobility,” said the Managing Director of GWM Malaysia, Cui Anqi.
