2026 BMW 7-Series gets Neue Klasse elements with update

Quick look

  • BMW’s flagship model gets its LCI update with substantial engineering changes and elements of the Neue Klasse.

  • It is the first BMW to feature the Panoramic iDrive system, which replaces traditional gauges with a pillar-to-pillar display at the base of the windshield.

The BMW 7-Series continues through its seventh generation with major updates that mark a significant shift in the brand’s approach with design philosophies drawn from the Neue Klasse.

Unveiled this week at Auto China 2026 in Beijing as well as at a special event in New York City, the latest version shows a move toward a more unified and reductive appearance, replacing  complex surfacing with clean, expansive planes and high-tech detailing.

Future BMW visual identity
At the front, the new 7-Series adopts a more sculpted face that previews the brand’s future visual identity. The iconic kidney grille has been reprofiled with slimmer, more vertical proportions and features an illuminated surround known as Iconic Glow. This central element is framed by a new split-headlight arrangement where the upper units are ultra-slim, housing the daytime running lights and signal indicators.

The lower portion of the front end remains largely hidden until the headlights are activated, contributing to a seamless appearance when the car is stationary. Advanced sensors, cameras, and radar hardware are now discreetly integrated into the bodywork or behind the grille surfaces (referred to as the ‘shy tech’ approach).

Viewed from the side, the updated sedan emphasizes its length with a high shoulder line and flush-fitting door handles that sit within classic recesses. The surfaces are exceptionally smooth, reflecting the Neue Klasse principle of ‘reduction to the essentials’. Depending on the trim level, these handles are finished in either pearl-effect chrome or high-gloss black, maintaining a tactile and premium feel.

The B-pillar now has an embossed numeral that identifies the model, visible only when the doors are open. This subtle detail serves as a point of distinction within the cabin’s entryway. On the exterior, the greenhouse is outlined with precision, leading toward a rear section that has been entirely reimagined to emphasize the substantial width.

The rear lights have been restyled to a new, elongated LED design that stretches deep into the quarter panels. These units have a smoked glass effect and house internal chrome strips that create an intricate, 3D light pattern. To maintain the clean look, the rear-view camera and boot release are hidden from sight, integrated into the dark areas of the lighting assembly.

Aerodynamics have played a crucial role in the update, with a redesigned front apron that has larger air curtains. A subtle spoiler lip at the bottom of the bumper helps to manage airflow more effectively under the car, reducing lift and turbulence. These changes not only improve the drag coefficient but also contribute to a quieter cabin by reducing wind noise at highway speeds.

The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional allow customers to add further sporting accents. Both options include the M Aerodynamics package, which in turn brings model-specific M Sport exterior design.

Substantial engineering updates
Underneath the substantial bodywork, the latest 7-Series benefits from substantial engineering updates inherited from the latest platform developments. The suspension system has been revised to incorporate advanced air springs and electronic dampers that react in real-time to road conditions.

This is paired with Integral Active Steering, which adjusts the rear-wheel angle to improve agility in tight spaces and stability at higher speeds.

7-Series PHEV

Beneath the floor, the structural rigidity of the chassis has been enhanced through the use of high-strength steel and aluminium components. This provides a more solid foundation for the suspension to work from, resulting in better isolation from road imperfections. The weight distribution remains optimized to ensure the balanced handling characteristics typical of the brand.

ICE, PHEV and EV
The petrol engine and PHEV powertrains gain an increase in efficiency and output. The 740i now has a revised 3-litre turbocharged inline-6 engine with updated turbocharging technology, while the flagship 760i xDrive continues with the potent V8 with mild-hybrid assistance. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission that has been recalibrated for smoother shifts.

i7 EV

The fully electric i7 gets next-generation cylindrical battery cells that offer improved energy density. This allows for a significantly extended driving range and faster DC charging capabilities up to 250 kW.

BMW Panoramic iDrive system
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive system makes its debut in the latest 7-Series. This system introduces a full-width Panoramic Vision display at the base of the windscreen, projecting vital information across the driver’s entire field of view. It is complemented by a large central touchscreen that handles most vehicle functions, further reducing the need for physical buttons.

For the first time, a dedicated 14.6-inch passenger display is fitted as standard, allowing the front-seat occupant to manage navigation or entertainment independently. This screen is integrated into the dashboard using a ‘floating’ design language that matches the central display.

The software backbone of the 7-Series is now based on BMW Operating System X, which supports comprehensive OTA (over-the-air) updates. This ensures that the infotainment, navigation, and even powertrain management systems remain current throughout the model’s lifecycle. Digital services are integrated more deeply, including 5G connectivity for faster data transfers and streaming.

Executive experience in the rear
The rear of the cabin continues to prioritize an executive experience with the upgraded BMW Theatre Screen. This massive 31.3-inch 8K display now includes an integrated camera for video conferencing, allowing for a mobile office environment.

The optional automatic doors have been optimized for the updated 7-Series. A button for opening and closing the doors is located in a new, more ergonomically optimal position on the inside of each door handle. The new Soft Close mechanism is particularly user friendly, closing the doors smoothly each time the customer gets in and out. Radar sensors allow the doors to be opened and closed more quickly than was previously possible, besides significantly lowering the risk of collision.

A new Panoramic Skylounge LED roof featuring 40 integrated LED lights is another highlight of the updated interior. The  lights can be synchronized with the car’s ‘My Modes’ to create different atmospheric themes, such as Relaxed or Expressive. The light patterns are designed to emulate the quilting found on the Merino leather or Veganza synthetic upholstery.

The 7-Series also introduces a new welcome sequence using over 194,000 LED pixels embedded in the door sills. Known as the Ceremonial Light Carpet, it projects dynamic patterns on the ground as the driver approaches. This sequence is customizable and changes based on the driver’s selected profile, adding a sense of theatre to the entry process.

Another new feature is the optional digital interior mirror, which enables the driver to use the conventional visual reflective mirror or a digital mirror function (using the rear camera). This is especially helpful when using the Theatre Screen as the view will not be obstructed.

Safety and convenience systems have also been expanded with the inclusion of an automated evasion manoeuvre system. This tech can detect potential collisions within the car’s lane and assist with steering inputs to avoid them. The Active Blind Spot Detection now includes a side collision protection feature that can actively shift the car away from a lateral threat.
