Xiaomi joins Playstation Vision GT ‘club’

Quick look

  • By becoming the first Chinese automaker in the Playstation Vision GT ‘club’, Xiaomi elevates its brand status from a tech company to a peer of legacy giants like Ferrari and Bugatti.

  • Unlike other VGT models which on exist in the sim-racing world, Xiaomi has built a full-sized physical model with engineering and technical details.

It’s been 28 years since Polyphony Digital started the Vision Gran Turismo (VGT) program which invited automakers to showcase designs unconstrained by the regulations, costs or manufacturing concerns. This unique program was intended to add a range of supercars to the Playstation Gran Turismo videogames which players could drive in simulations. In other words, they exist only in the virtual world, with the exception of a few (like the GTI Roadster).

Up till yesterday, there were 18 supercars and hypercars from automakers from Europe, America and Japan. At the 2026 Mobile World Congress in Spain, the 19th model was presented and it comes from Xiaomi – the first Chinese automaker to join the VGT ‘club’.

Full-sized model
While most VGT cars are purely digital exercises, Xiaomi has built a full-scale physical model for the annual show. The design is a radical departure from more ‘production-friendly’ form of the SU7 EV sedan on sale.

Chief designer Li Tianyuan explained that the body, sculpted by the wind, incorporates a floating teardrop cockpit design instead of sticking on giant wings. With the low-slung, central-cockpit layout and scissors doors, it looks more like a Le Mans prototype than a road car.

Maximum aerodynamic efficiency
Maximising aerodynamic efficiency has had a strong focus, as evident by the Active Wake Control which is a system that uses micro-nozzles to manage airflow at the rear, eliminating the need for a traditional spoiler.

There are also Accretion Rims, centre-locked wheels with hub covers that remain stationary while the wheel spins, reducing aerodynamic turbulence. Li said his aim was to achieve top aerodynamic performance without bolting on components but integrating them in the design.

Target output of almost 1,400 kW
Underneath the light blue bodywork is Xiaomi’s proprietary 900V Silicon Carbide platform. While the final output for the sim version hasn’t been officially confirmed, the engineering team is targeting figures close to 1,400 kW (around 1,900 hp) range. To put that in perspective, that’s nearly 600 hp more than Ferrari’s Vision GT concept, making it one of the most powerful VGT models.

Elevating image as automaker
Having a presence in Playstation Gran Turismo 7 alongside other supercar brands like Lamborghini and Bugatti elevates the image of Xiaomi and positions it as a serious automotive player, more so because it has already shown it can make advanced cars. While there might not be a model exactly like the VGT concept at MWC, it suggests that there could be even more extreme models coming to showrooms in future.
