Volkswagen’s most powerful GTI won’t be a Golf

For half a century, the GTI badge has been regarded as the benchmark for practical performance, defined by a formula that balanced everyday usability with accessible driver engagement.

The original GTI began as a variant of the Golf in 1976.

That legacy began in 1976 with the original Volkswagen Golf GTI, a small FWD hatchback that gave birth to the ‘hot hatch’ segment. Five decades later, Volkswagen is bringing the GTI badge into the electric age with the most powerful production GTI ever built.

Fully electric GTI
While it has been the Golf GTI (over different generations) that has always been the most powerful GTI, this GTI will only spiritually be related to that model as it is instead the fully electric ID.3 GTI.

Visually, the ID.3 GTI draws heavily from historic design cues while establishing a distinct electric identity. Up front, standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights are linked by an illuminated light bar and logo, topped by the traditional red GTI horizontal stripe. Vertical LED lighting elements set into the lower bumper signal its electric powertrain, positioned alongside a high-gloss black honeycomb air intake and front splitter.

Standard 20-inch alloy wheels, named Worthersee in homage to the famous Austrian owner gathering, fill the wheelarches. Unlike the outgoing ID.3 GTX, which had black exterior paneling on the roof and tailgate, the ID.3 GTI has the roof section, spoiler, and bootlid finished in full body colour, giving a longer, lower profile.

Rear-wheel drive
Fundamentally different from what traditionalists associate with the GTI badge, the ID.3 GTI has only a single electric motor, powering the rear wheels. The motor generates 240 kW (326 ps)/545 Nm to give a 0 – 100 km/h capability claimed to be 5.6 seconds and a top speed somewhere beyond the 200 km/h electronic limit.

Maximizing transfer of all that output to the road relies on a standard Launch Control system, while an adaptive DCC sports chassis and progressive steering work with a low centre of gravity collaborate to preserve the agility and driving dynamics that have long characterised the Golf GTI.

Powering the motor is a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery that can provide up to 601 kms of range. When recharging with a DC fast charger at 183 kW, the pack can refill from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. The ID.3 GTI also has V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality via an optional PowerSocket adapter, making it possible to use the electricity in the battery pack to power external devices or equipment.

Pressing the illuminated GTI button on the steering wheel activates a dedicated driving mode that firms up the chassis and powertrain response, switches the digital instrument display to focus on power output and speed, changes ambient lighting to red, and plays a synthetic combustion engine note through the cabin.

The sport seats are finished in a modern interpretation of the classic tartan pattern, dubbed ‘Superclark’. Infotainment duties are handled by a 12.9-inch touchscreen sitting alongside an enlarged digital instrument panel, supported by updated physical controls for climate settings and a central rotary knob for audio functions.
