Upgraded Toyota Yaris now in showrooms

As the Toyota Yaris reaches its mid-cycle point after being launched in Malaysia in 2019, it’s time for the usual update of looks and features. To date, over 60,300 units have been delivered nationwide and it remains a popular choice for those looking for a hatchback in the non-national brand segment.

2-tone option now available
Both the Yaris 1.5E and 1.5G versions, assembled at UMWT’s own plant in Selangor, receive updates. For the exterior, there’s sporty new front and rear skirting. Customers have a choice of five body colours with Red Mica Metallic and Platinum White Pearl available in single or 2-tone options (with a black roof). However, the 2-tone option is not available if you choose the Silver Metallic finish.

For those who want to add extra sportiness, UMWT offers an optional Aerokit for RM2,500. This consists of a Front Bumper Spoiler, Rear Bumper Spoiler, Side Skirts and Roof Spoiler.

Changes within
Changes within the new Yaris include a more striking fabric design for the seats, as well as a more spacious touchscreen display now expanded to 9 inches.

There’s also a new instrument panel cluster with red and white graphics for a sporty image. The instruments are the Optitron type which were originally developed for Lexus and offer greater clarity in all lighting conditions.

The infotainment system is Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Ready so favourite apps from the smartphone can be mirrored onto the display for access.

For those with smartphones that can charge wirelessly, a charging pad is available. The 2 USB ports for rear passengers have also been upgraded to the Type C standard which can carry a stronger charging current. However, you will need to be sure to keep a cable with Type C connectors at both ends instead of the usual Type A cable.

A front driving video recorder (DVR) is also now standard, and this comes with smartphone connectivity for easier management and download of video clips. The DVR is installed at UMWT’s own Accessories Centre so the wiring is professionally done and neatly kept out of sight. Customers can also include an optional rear DVR when they purchase their Yaris.

In addition to the above, UMWT is providing a pre-installed RFID tag with each new Yaris. As with the DVR installation, the RFID tag is attached correctly to ensure that it functions properly when passing through toll plazas.

Toyota Safety Sense
The Yaris has a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, the highest rating from the independent safety organisation. Besides its strong body, it also has Toyota Safety Sense which is a suite of active safety systems that help the driver to be aware of hazards and also take autonomous action to prevent collisions.

To aid parking and reversing, the Yaris has a 3D Panoramic View Monitor, parking sensors at the front and rear, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The latter system, which complements the Blind Spot monitor, is useful when reversing out of a parking spot as the sensors can both sides to detect approaching vehicles. If there is a vehicle approaching, the driver will be alerted and an accident can be avoided.

As with most of the Toyota models distributed by UMWT, there is not only a security system built in but also a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS). This uses GPS/GSM to identify the car’s location (when required), making it easier for authorities to recover it if it is stolen. The service is complimentary for the first 3 years of ownership.

1.5-litre Dual VVT-i engine + CVT
Both variants continue to be powered by the proven 2NR-FE 1.5-litre DOHC Dual VVT-i engine with an output of 107 ps/140 Nm. Power delivery to the front wheels is via a 7-speed Shiftmatic CVT with sequential manual selection and a sports mode. Specifically for the Yaris 1.5G, there are paddle shifters with the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

5 year warranty/unlimited mileage
UMWT provides a 5-year warranty with no limit on mileage, so owners enjoy coverage for the full 60 months after registration. The optional Toyota Service Savers package is also available to owners and reduces servicing costs during the first 5 years (or 100,000 kms) of ownership.
