The WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV has been well received with over 800 bookings within the first week of the MPV’s launch in Malaysia.

The G9 is assembled in Melaka for the local market as well as exports to other regional markets, starting with Thailand.
Two years ago, when GWM Malaysia previewed the TANK 300 at the Malaysia Auto Show, it seemed like a big question mark whether a pricetag of RM250,000 for a SUV from China would be accepted. In the past, when considering models over the RM200,000 mark, there was usually a preference for German brands.
Yet at the motorshow, over 150 bookings were received and the TANK would receive enthusiastic response when it was officially launched. The same thing was evident with other Chinese models; though new to the market, they made such a strong and positive first impression that people just had to have one.

Two years later, GWM’s HAVAL brand is one of the fast-movers in the market, and the recently launched WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV MPV has also been well accepted. Within its first week of availability, more than 800 bookings have been received for the luxury MPV priced from RM269,800.
Exported to Thailand as well
Confident of its acceptance in other markets, GWM has already started exporting the G9, assembled in Malaysia, to Thailand. This export strategy is intended to utilize Malaysia’s existing automotive supply chain, which includes over 72 specialized vendors and a technical workforce, while positioning the country as a regional hub for the export of right-hand drive vehicles within ASEAN. Vehicles assembled in Malaysia can enjoy duty-free privileges when imported to other ASEAN countries under the regional Free Trade Agreement.

Hi4 intelligent hybrid system
The WEY G9 is equipped with the Hi4 intelligent plug-in hybrid (PHEV) hybrid system, which has a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with a dual-motor set-up. This configuration provides all-wheel drive and a combined system output of 442 ps/642 Nm, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.7 seconds.

Efficiency is a primary focus of the hybrid electric powertrain which uses a 44.2 kWh battery. Recharging with a DC power supply, the battery can be ‘’filled’ from 30% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes. With a fully charged battery, up to 170 kms of electric-only motoring is possible. Of greater note is the potential range of 1,000 kms with a full tank and full battery.

Being a PHEV also avoids worries about recharging as there is the engine to provide continued propulsion. GWM says that it would be very rare for the battery to be completely empty and prevent the vehicle from moving, and it can still run on the engine alone though that’s only in emergencies. The driver would be alerted of a technical issue which should be checked and rectified by the service centre.
