GWM Malaysia launches WEY G9 PHEV, assembled locally

The G9 is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) priced at RM269,800, with a potential range of over 1,000 kms
Assembled in Malaysia, the MPV is for both the local market as well as for export as part of GWM’s regional strategy.

Another new premium MPV has entered the market with the launch of the WEY G9 from GWM Malaysia, priced from RM269,800.

The WEY brand, part of GWM’s portfolio, is named after Wei Jianjun (also known as Jack Wey) who founded Great Wall Motor in 1990 at the age of 26.

While many of the latest premium MPVs are fully electric, the G9 has a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain which may appeal to more people who worry about the limitations of a fully electric vehicle. Assembled locally in Melaka, the G9 uses an advanced Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system developed by GWM.

442 ps/642 Nm, 16.1 kms per litre
Combined output from the electric motor and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is 442 ps/642 Nm, an impressive amount of power which gives claimed capability of 5.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.

In spite of the high output, the fuel consumption is said to be around 16.1 kms/litre which gives a potential range of 1,000 kms on a full tank of fuel and fully charged battery. Additionally, it is also possible to travel up to 170 kms on just electric power (depending on battery level).

Hi4 technology
The Hi4 technology also encompasses chassis engineering (with aluminium suspension) and the G9 has 50:50 weight distribution front:rear for stable handling and ride comfort. Power is also directed to specific wheels to enhance handling and grip during cornering, enhancing grip and safety.

Better than a living room?
As a premium MPV, the G9 comes with a spacious cabin that is as good as your living room (maybe even better!). Zero-gravity powered seats with nappa leather upholstery have ventilation and 10-point massage functions for a more relaxed journey.

Passengers also have many convenience features, including USB ports for keeping their devices charged and a 12.5-litre refrigerator to keep drinks cold (not just cool) or hot.

The G9 also has V2L charging, so electricity from the battery can be used to power external equipment or devices.

Structured like a ”fortress’
Much attention has gone into the structural engineering of the G9 to create a ‘fortress’ that protects the occupants on all sides from all types of accidents. The structure and bodywork have an industry-leading 81.96% application of high-strength steel, with 2000 MPa ultra-high-strength steel in the A and B-pillars and in critical zones, ensuring superior structural integrity of the cabin.

Should the G9 roll over, the crush resistance of the roof is 12 tons, achieved through a load-bearing body design with a longitudinal + 7 cross-member frame structure, closed door-ring design, and hot-stamped front cross beam.

A large percentage of accidents are usually frontal collisions and to provide strong protection, the front bumper beam includes a 6-series aluminium extrusion, achieving 71.4% forward coverage. Additionally, the energy-absorption system adopts a wide-body all-aluminium crash box, full-frame sub-chassis, and 4 longitudinal + 7 cross-member frame structure ensure effective energy absorption across crash scenarios, dispersing impact forces.

Large-size side airbags
In severe accidents, the large-size side curtain airbags will deploy, providing full-length protection for every occupants, even those in the third row. The extended inflation duration of 6 seconds with over 112 litres of inflated volume offers maximum cushioning and protection, especially against head injuries, in rollover or severe collision scenarios.

Exported to Thailand
As reported recently, the Malaysian-assembled G9is also exported to Thailand as part of GWM’s regional strategy which uses Malaysia as a production hub.
