Michelin Primacy 5 now available for SUVs as well

Quick look

  • The Primacy 5 range now has SUV-specific tyres with a total of 76 sizes different size options from 16 to 22 inches.

  • Prices start from starting from RM467 for smaller diameters and reach RM1,639 for the largest 22-inch fitments.

With SUVs and crossovers still very much dominating the market, Michelin Malaysia has expanded its current Primacy 5 range to cater to such vehicles. Available in 34 new fitments covering wheel diameters ranging from 16 to 22 inches (totaling 76 different size options), the range covers a broad range of models on Malaysian roads.

According to the Michelin Malaysia, the SUV-specific Primacy 5 has been reinforced with different sidewall constructions compared to the standard passenger car tyres to better manage the higher centre of gravity and increased loading associated with these vehicles.

Technical specifications for the Primacy 5 include the integration of the Silent Rib Gen-3 technology, which focuses on the geometric pattern of the tread blocks. This design aims to minimize the air pumping effect that occurs as the tyre rotates, which is a primary source of cabin noise. Data from the manufacturer indicates that these refinements allow the tyre to maintain low acoustic levels, a characteristic that is particularly relevant for electric SUV owners who do not have engine noise to mask tyre roar.

Wet weather performance remains a focal point for these tyres through the use of the EverGrip and EverTread rubber compounds. These functional elastomers are formulated to maintain a consistent contact patch even as the tread depth diminishes over time. Third-party testing data provided by the tyremaker show that these compounds, combined with the tread geometry, give in a 16% reduction in wet braking distances when compared to previous versions of the same product line.

Longevity is managed through MaxTouch technology, which is a mechanical approach to footprint distribution. By ensuring that the forces of acceleration, braking, and cornering are spread evenly across the surface of the tyre, the rate of wear is reduced. This uniform pressure distribution is intended to prevent irregular wear patterns that often plague heavier SUVs, potentially extending the service life.

For the growing electric vehicle market, the Primacy 5 has been optimized to reduce rolling resistance by approximately 10%. This efficiency gain is achieved through a specific high-performance tread compound that requires less energy to deform as the tyre rolls. This reduction in energy loss is a key factor for EV owners looking to maximize their range without altering their driving habits or vehicle settings.
