Over 24,000 units of the current generation of the Ford Ranger have been delivered in Malaysia since it was launched in 2022. During the four years, the popular global model has undergone periodic revisions and updates which are typical for a product that has a life-cycle of around 10 years. The changes have usually been introduced in specific variants at different times, sustaining interest over the long term.

Today, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford, which represents the American brand in Malaysia, has introduced three new variants of the Ranger to cater for different segments of the truck market.
This recognises how pick-up trucks have long ceased to be merely basic utility workhorses; they are increasingly expected to perform as everyday commuter vehicles, family transport, and recreational adventures machines.

The three new Rangers build on the platform’s core hardware and engineering, offering up to 1,000 kgs of payload capacity, a 3,500-kg towing rating, and a water-wading depth of up to 800 mm. Drivetrain technologies across the range include a 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift, Electronic Shift-on-the-Fly, and an Electromagnetic Transfer Case.
Ranger Platinum
Positioned at the top of the local range, the new Ranger Platinum is tailored for professionals, executives, and business owners seeking an elevated level of vehicle refinement without losing pick-up capability.

Under the bonnet, the Ranger Platinum is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 single-turbodiesel engine which produces 250 ps/600 Nm. While pick-up trucks usually have on-demand 4×4, the Ranger Platinum comes with a full-time 4WD system like a SUV. The automatic transmission has 10 forward ratios, allowing for an extremely wide spread to take on all type of driving conditions.

This Ranger can be identified by an exclusive Platinum front grille design, 20-inch alloy wheels, a Flexible Rack System, and an Acacia Green paint finish offered only for this variant. Inside, the cabin has an ambience not far different from a passenger car. Standard are quilted leather-accented upholstery with heating and ventilation for the front seats, signature Platinum embossing, and an 8-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.

Ranger Sport
The Ranger Sport targets urban professionals and families looking for a mid-tier balance between dynamic exterior styling and everyday functionality. Buyers of the Ranger Sport can select between two powertrain options: the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel paired with full-time 4WD, or the 2.0-litre single turbodiesel engine fitted with a part-time 4×4 drivetrain.

Visually, the Ranger Sport can be identified by front grille treatment with sporty black accents, 18-inch alloy wheels, and variant-specific exterior trim details.

Befitting its ‘sport’ tag, the cabin has seats with 2-tone upholstery for a sporty feel. Full running information is shown on a digital instrument panel, while infotainment is managed on a 12-inch central multi-touchscreen display unit with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice recognition functionality.

Ranger XL
When the Ranger was introduced to the Malaysian market in the late 1990s, it changed people’s perception of a truck. Up till then, a truck was only for work; it was basic and not always pleasant to drive. Ford changed that by making the Ranger cabin feel like a passenger car – and even providing the conveniences of a car.

Safety was also comparable, and in Thailand, Ford’s provision of safety features in the Ranger was appreciated by buyers who felt that it cared even for those who used it as a workhorse.
Today, Ford still offers the Ranger XL as a base version for customers who require tough, proven transport for their businesses and fleet operators who require a functional and straightforward utility vehicle.

The XL variant focuses on utility, offering a durable truck bed layout engineered for daily cargo transport duties. Ample power comes from the proven 2.0-litre single turbodiesel engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4×4 drivetrain.

Despite its commercial orientation, the vehicle includes modern safety and cabin tech as standard equipment, with no less than 6 airbags around the cabin, driver assistance features, dual-zone climate control, and multiple USB charging outlets.

Increased attention to East Malaysia
Since taking over Ford distributorship in 2008, Auto ConneXion-Ford has maintained its commitment to grow its business in East Malaysia which is ‘pick-up country’. This year sees the opening of a new Parts Hub in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, set to begin phased operations from the end of this month. Serving as an extension of the Central Parts Hub in Selangor, the facility will significantly boost regional aftersales support.
The hub will initially stock roughly 1,000 fast-moving genuine Ford and Motorcraft parts, covering maintenance, wear-and-tear, and accident repair components. By localizing supply, Ford aims to cut waiting times for parts, offering same-day delivery within Kota Kinabalu to ensure faster repairs and reduced downtime for owners.

The expansion means better support for Ford’s East Malaysian network of 9 authorized touchpoints — including 2 dedicated service-only centres serving communities in Kapit and Mukah, Sarawak. This reinforces Auto ConneXion-Ford’s commitment to providing comprehensive aftersales support across both urban and remote areas.
