GRMN Corolla – the ultimate GR Corolla

‘GRMN’ has existed in Toyota’s range since 2009 with the Toyota iQ GRMN. The ‘GR’ part refers to Toyota’s performance brand, while ‘MN’ refers ‘Meister of Nurburgring’. This legendary racetrack in Germany is connected to GAZOO Racing which had its debut there in 2007.

GRMN can be said to be the ultimate of GR versions, with boosted engine output and extensive tuning to make it ready for competition right out of the GR dealership. The latest GRMN Corolla is another example of what GRMN is all about and it was developed at the Nurburgring as well as Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series.

The GRMN Corolla exists because Toyota Master Driver Morizo (who is actually Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation and the driving force behind GR) wants to ‘bring back a Corolla that captivates our customers’.

‘Morizo’ is the name Toyota Master Driver Akio Toyoda has used when racing. He formed the GAZOO Racing team in 2007 and has been its driving force to this day, and is personally involved in development of the high-performance cars.

Limited production
It will be produced in limited numbers, primarily for Japan, North America, and Australia. In Japan, plans are to accept ‘sales negotiation requests’ via the GR smartphone app from later in 2026, with sales scheduled to begin in 2027.

With the GRMN badge, the GR Corolla shifts from being a highly competent daily-driven performance car into a hardcore, track-first machine. Its uncompromising evolution is a direct product of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s core philosophy. This calls for building sportscars using real-time data and feedback from professional racing drivers — including Master Driver Morizo himself. The goal is to inject raw motorsport DNA into road-going cars, turning everyday platforms like the Yaris and Corolla into high performance cars that are race-ready.

Weight-cutting
To make the GRMN Corolla worthy of its badge, GR engineers started by putting the hot hatch on a strict ‘diet’. First, the rear seats were deleted turning it into a strict 2-seater. Combined with other targeted weight-saving measures, the GRMN sheds 30 kgs compared to the standard model, bringing its kerb weight down to a lean 1,450 kgs.

Increased torque
Under the functional bonnet with ducting, the G16E-GTS 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine receives a boost in output. While peak horsepower remains steady at 320 ps, maximum torque has been raised to 415 Nm, providing an extra 15 Nm of mid-range punch.

The engine tuning drew on data from Toyota’s campaign running a hydrogen-powered GR Corolla in endurance racing, optimizing the power band between 3,600 and 4,800 rpm to ensure the car rockets out of tight corners.

The control program of the GRMN Corolla’s electric power steering has been modified to generate the required amount of assistance torque even during cornering under high g-forces. The exclusively tuned 4WD control system provides optimal rear torque distribution during straight-line driving and enhanced stability at the onset of steering input at extremely high speeds.

Customized bodywork
The exterior has aggressive front fender ducts, specialized front side spoilers, and a prominent rear wing equipped with a 5-step manual adjustment mechanism to adjust downforce to specific tracks.

The chassis and aerodynamic packages have received major engineering enhancements to handle the extra muscle. Beneath the skin, the GRMN Corolla rides on wider, 245/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The exclusive front and rear monotube shock absorbers were developed by adjusting their stroke down to a millimetre at the front and rear for optimal balance.

Driver-focussed cockpit
The cockpit’s design and colour scheme create a space that enables the driver to focus more fully on driving and features an exclusive flocked instrument panel and flocked front pillars.

Carbonfibre ornamentation —developed and manufactured by the Carbon Section at Toyota’s Motomachi Plant — adorns the instrument panel on the passenger side. Other special items include instrument panel padding bearing Morizo’s signature, door trim and shift knob accented in Alumite Red, and a GRMN-exclusive serial numberplate.
