Lower-priced variant joins Chery TIGGO 8 range

Quick look

  • TIGGO 8 priced at RM129,800 gives a lower-priced third option for those who want a 7-seat crossover TIGGO SUV.

  • While the features are extensive, the engine has a smaller 1.6-litre displacement than the 2-litre unit in the TIGGO 8 PRO.

When a brand is new to the market, it has to give more but charge less to draw customers. Though its products may be on par with those already in the market, there are still unknowns and buyers need incentives to choose a newcomer instead of one already proven.

First impressions count
The Chinese automakers understand this and have made first impressions count. Their initial offerings have come with not just the latest technologies but have also been packed with features, making them good value for money. High quality also helps and of course, the technologies are in many cases innovative.

Chery, though having been around 20 years ago, also ‘started again’ with the rest. However, its range is very different today, certainly a huge leap up in all respects. Still, its early models were extensively equipped and even saw upgrades in technologies in the past year.

The effort has paid off and Chery slotted into the Top 10 brands in the market within just 2 years. Cumulatively, Chery Malaysia has delivered over 30,000 vehicles, with 40% in the last year alone.

Expanding the TIGGO range
Now that the brand has been accepted and sales continue to grow, the time has come to
expand the range by offering additional variants at other price points. One of these is the TIGGO 8 which joins the TIGGO 8 PRO that was launched in July 2023, and TIGGO 8 PHEV CSH which entered the market in October 2025.

Sharing the same appearance as the other 7-seater TIGGO variants, the TIGGO 8 is priced at RM129.800 , which is RM30,000 cheaper than the other two versions. “Following the encouraging demand for the TIGGO 8 series and the feedback we received from our Malaysian customers, we saw an opportunity to further enhance this line-up with a new variant that is ideal for customers seeking a vehicle with generous space and strong overall value,” said Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice-President, Chery Malaysia.

Smaller engine but still powerful
Under the bonnet, the TIGGO 8 differs from the PRO variant in that its engine displacement is 1.6 litres (instead of 2 litres) but it still has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (wet type) delivering power to the front wheels. With turbocharging, output from the 4-cylinder engine is an impressive 197 ps/290 Nm which not only gives strong acceleration but will also be useful when carrying a full load.

With direct fuel-injection, the engine also runs with high fuel efficiency and a consumption of 14.3 kms/litre is claimed. That should provide over 800 kms on a full 57-litre tank of fuel.

Within the 4.772-metre long body is a spacious cabin that includes 1,930 litres of cargo space. The tailgate is motorised, making opening and closing easy, and there’s also a sunroof as standard (normally a premium feature).

The TIGGO 8 has not been assessed by ASEAN NCAP yet but it does have a maximum 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. Passive protection is provided by 6 airbags while the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has active systems that help the driver to be aware of surrounding traffic conditions and also assist in emergencies to avoid an accident.
