Now on sale: Toyota Vellfire with electrified HEV powertrain

It’s no secret that UMW Toyota Motor will be launching a HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version of the popular Vios, the bestselling model among non-Malaysian brands in 2025. (according to JPJ data). The launch date has not been announced but before then, UMWT has started sending the new Vellfire 2.5 HEV Executive Lounge in showrooms, ready for purchase from today.

As the ‘HEV’ indicates, this too has a hybrid electric powertrain so it looks like Toyota will be pushing electrified models this year. With years of developing HEV technology since it launched the world’s first mass-produced HEV sedan in the late 1990s, Toyota today has refined and advanced the technology which is offered on almost all its models.

The Multipathway approach
The Vellfire 2.5 HEV is one such model and is one mobility solution in Toyota’s Multipathway approach which offers different powertrains to address climate change and ultimately achieve carbon-neutrality, With the Multi Pathway approach, Toyota is making sure no one is left behind as there are different and practical solutions for different markets and regions. For Malaysia at this time, the automaker believes HEVs are the best solution while the infrastructure to support fully electric vehicles continues to be developed.

More power, better fuel efficiency
Powered by a 2.5-litre Dynamic Force Hybrid System,the Vellfire HEV combines a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with a high-output electric motor to deliver total system output of 250 ps (37% more than standard Vellfire 2.5), with up to 270 Nm of torque available from the motor and 230 Nm from the engine. With the motor sharing the work of moving the vehicle, CO₂ emissions are reduced while fuel consumption is claimed to be 17.5 kms/litre. It is also possible to drive some distance on just electric power, which means there are zero emissions.

Like other Toyota HEV models, the Vellfire’s powertrain is self-charging while the vehicle is moving. Additionally, regenerative braking also recovers some energy during braking which is sent back to the battery. Thus, the driver does not need to worry about finding a charging station but can still enjoy some of the benefits of electrified motoring.

Omotenashi comfort
Adhering to the Japanese philosophy of omotenashi (hospitality), the Vellfire HEV has been designed to anticipate every passenger’s needs whether as a mobile office or as a premium MPV.

Its Executive Lounge VIP Seats feature full power adjustments in multiple ways, ventilation, ottoman and massage functions – all controlled via a multi-operation panel. Features such as a table that can be rotated, enlarged armrests with integrated vanity mirrors and anti-vibration seat structures further enhance the sense of relaxation, comfort and indulgence.

Standard features include nappa leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces and ambient ceiling illumination with 64 selectable colours. An advanced 15-speaker JBL audio system, paired with a rear 14-inch ceiling-mounted display provide multimedia entertainment. Via the Vehicle Telematics System, the owner can start the engine remotely to cool down the interior before entering.

Priced from RM549,900 (without insurance), the Vellfire 2.5 HEV Executive Lounge is available in Platinum White Pearl, Precious Metal, and Black, with interior themes in Black or the flagship-exclusive Sunset Brown. The standard Vellfire 2.5 is also available, priced from RM448,000 (without insurance).
