The judging panel recognised its practicality over hype approach, balancing a new aerodynamic crossover design with user-friendly tech and everyday affordability.
Although there have been many new EVs over the past 16 years, especially in the past 8 years, the model which can be considered as the pioneer of mass-market EVs is still a contender in the market in its third-generation form.
This comes from it being chosen as the Supreme Winner of the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year (WWCOTY) for 2026. The award is given by an organisation with an international panel of female automotive journalists.

The WWCOTY jury evaluated 55 contenders based on criteria that affect daily driving experiences, such as safety, value, and ease of use. The panel specifically noted the LEAF’s balanced approach to electric performance and its focus on practical, day-to-day functionality. Rather than focusing solely on performance figures, the voting process prioritized how effectively a vehicle addresses the actual needs of its users.

The third-generation LEAF features a more aerodynamic crossover profile, moving away from the traditional hatchback styling of its predecessors. This design shift is accompanied by an enhanced range and the integration of more intuitive onboard technology. These updates were key factors in the EV’s ability to stand out among a wide variety of global competitors.

Marta García, Executive President of WWCOTY, observed that the voting reflected a focus on vehicles that offer a mature and intelligent approach to electrification. She noted that the LEAF succeeded because it makes electric mobility accessible and usable for a broader audience.
“The results showed that while many modern vehicles are technically advanced, the jury favoured those that provide a coherent and realistic solution for consumers,” she explained.
In addition to the overall supreme title, the LEAF also secured the award for Best Compact Car. This category win was attributed to its practical nature and its role in providing an entry point into the electric segment without the complexity often found in high-end models. The dual recognition highlights the model’s consistent performance throughout the various stages of the competition.

A relevant choice
The 2026 awards process involved months of testing and analysis by 86 journalists representing over 50 countries. Their feedback indicated that the LEAF remains a relevant choice by focusing on interior space and efficient urban performance. By avoiding overly complex technical solutions, the EV offers a driving experience that feels familiar to those transitioning from internal combustion engines.

This year’s results also highlight a broader trend in the automotive sector where sustainability and user-centered design are becoming central to product development. The high level of competition across all categories suggests that manufacturers are increasingly refining their electric offerings to compete on more than just range or acceleration.
WWCOTY since 2009
The Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year was founded in 2009 and is the only automotive awards program judged exclusively by women motoring journalists. The organization aims to provide an expert assessment of new models from a unique female perspective while highlighting the importance of mobility as an enabler of opportunities.
