Hot Wheels Special Edition Proton Saga for 40th birthday

It’s the 40th birthday of the Proton Saga today. Since its birth on July 9, 1985, over 2 million units of Malaysia’s National Car have been sold (1.2 million of the first generation) in Malaysia as well as exported overseas.

That number does not include thousands of Hot Wheels Proton Sagas made by Mattel – also produced in Malaysia at its factory in Prai, Penang (which is the largest Hot Wheels factory in the world). In 2022, Hot Wheels and Proton unveiled a prototype of their very first collaboration: a Hot Wheels 1:64 scale diecast of the iconic 1985 Proton Saga, in conjunction with Mattel Malaysia’s 40th anniversary celebration.

The model went on sale from December 2023 and apart from being special to Malaysians, what made it even more special was that the artwork on the Special Edition package was designed by a 9-year old Malaysian girl, Saw Jane Harn, who won the Hot Wheels x Proton Kids Design Competition.

Saw Jane Harn’s winning design is seen around the world on the package of the Special Edition Proton Saga by Hot Wheels.

Her winning design captures and celebrates a range of Malaysia’s natural features and achievements, from the rhinoceros hornbill and hibiscus, the country’s national bird and flower, and the National Monument.

Now, for the 40th birthday of the Saga, Proton has again teamed up with Mattel to produce a new Hot Wheels Proton Saga Special Edition diecast model. It is in white (the original is in red) and is released in time for this special day.

It’s available at major toyshops, department stores, convenience stores, hypermarkets and petrol marts around the country. Get yours today and have a piece of Malaysian history on your desk.
