Evolved Volvo EX90 to be launched in September

When Volvo Car Malaysia first introduced the EX90 to the local market in April 2025, it was the Swedish brand’s inaugural software-driven, 7-seater electric vehicle. The large 7-seat SUV set out to redefine what luxury buyers expect from a large family vehicle while maintaining Volvo’s historic emphasis on occupant protection.

Soon, an updated EX90 will be in Malaysian showrooms but rather than a superficial aesthetic redesign (aka facelift), this evolution concentrates heavily on the underlying engineering, replacing the earlier electrical foundation with a new 800V platform.

Engineering and performance refinements
The transition to an 800V architecture brings measurable benefits to powertrain efficiency and overall packaging. Operating at double the voltage of the standard 400V systems in many EVs allows the EX90 to draw less current for the same power requirement.

This directly translates into reduced internal resistance, less heat buildup, and a lower dependency on heavy copper wiring, ultimately reducing overall vehicle weight.

Charging from 10% to 80% is said to take around 22 minutes at DC fast-charging stations with a power supply of 250 kW.

The revised Twin Motor All-Wheel-Drive powertrain delivers a total system output of 507 kW (680 hp)/870 Nm. Power delivery remains controlled and linear through tuned performance software, delivering substantial real-world overtaking ability without disturbing the quiet environment of the passenger cabin.

Safety and software integration
Volvo’s commitment to active safety continues to form the core philosophy of the EX90, as with all Volvos. The SUV utilizes what the manufacturer terms a Safe Space Technology shield, powered by a central core computer that processes real-time data from an array of exterior sensors.

Inside, an integrated cabin sensing system monitors the driver and interior conditions. The system operates unobtrusively, intervening only when telemetry suggests the driver requires assistance.

Furthermore, because the EX90 relies heavily on a centralized computing system, OTA (over-the-air) software updates allow vehicle functions and active safety algorithms to be refined throughout the lifecycle of the vehicle.
