EV Connection (EVC) has introduced JomChargeX, a dedicated sub-brand offering ultra-fast electric vehicle charging with DC power supply ranging from 200 kW up to peak capacity of 1,200 kW. This brings to EV owners capability in close technical competition with BYD’s 1,500 kW Flash Charging system which will also be available in Malaysia.
5 minutes from 20% – 70%
The addition of the JomChargeX charging station aims to reduce usage times at public charging locations. At maximum output, the fastest JomChargeX DC chargers can recharge an EV battery from 20% to 70% in 5 minutes.
“One big roadblock to EV adoption in Malaysia has always been that it takes 5 minutes to pump petrol… but 30 minutes to charge an EV. The EV industry had no direct answer to that previously – but now JomChargeX provides a solution with charging speeds so fast that topping up an EV feels as quick and effortless as fuelling up a petrol car,” said Ir Lee Yuen How, Managing Director of EV Connection.
EV must be compatible
However, the EV’s architecture must also be able to take such a high-power supply. At the moment, models from DENZA (in Malaysia) have that compatibility. Those that charge at lower power levels will not have the same high speed promised at 1,000 kW.
EVC, which currently manages more than 1,000 charging points nationwide, is initially deploying the powerful chargers at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit and XPark Sunway Serene in Selangor.
Two sites initially
The PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit site has 360 kW of total DC charging capacity distributed across 6 nozzles. At the XPark is a 480 kW total output charger across 2 nozzles, making it the highest capacity DC charging station currently available in the country.
Future JomChargeX locations under development include highway rest areas, recreational stops, and fast-food drive-thrus in key locations such as Ipoh, Tapah, Penang, Yong Peng, Johor Bahru, Alor Setar, Taiping, Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Kerteh, and Tanjung Malim.
The JomChargeX chargers will feature a distinct visual wrap for identification on site, with ultra-fast location filters scheduled to be integrated into the existing JomCharge mobile application to assist drivers in route planning.
