Quick look

For 2026, the flagship X90 SUV gets the locally assembled 1.5-litre i-GT 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, trading a slight dip in peak power for better long-term reliability and lower maintenance costs.

Though lacking an ADAS package, the X90 is undoubtedly the ‘value king’ as it is the most affordable D-segment SUV.
As expected, the 2026 Proton X90 – flagship of Proton’s range – has also switched to the new 4-cylinder i-GT turbocharged 1.5-litre engine in place of the previous engine which had a 48V mild hybrid system. The new 181 ps/291 Nm engine, which is also used for the latest X50, X70 and S70, is assembled locally at the PROTON manufacturing complex in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Three versions
The 2026 range is available in three versions – Lite, Prime and Prime X – priced at RM106,800, RM116,800 and RM122,800, respectively. As with the launch of other new Proton models, early buyers pay a lower price and for the new X90, there is a RM7,000 rebate for all versions.

There’s also overtrade support of up to RM3,000 for the first 2,500 customers (who book and register before June 30, 2026). If you have a very old car, you can also take advantage of the Pro-Xchange programme which will give up to RM4,000 for the vehicle that will be deregistered and scrapped. Financing packages are available for up to 9 years at interest rates starting from 1.95%.

Features list revised
If not for the significant engine change, this would be pretty much an update as the X90 does not show major cosmetic changes. In accordance with the streamlining to three versions, the equipment and features have also been revised and for those who must have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, this is now standard across the range.
Comfort remains a key attraction of the X90, with premium features designed to make both daily commutes and long-distance journeys enjoyable as well. This being a D-segment SUV, there are 3 rows of seats, allowing for 7-seat or 6-seat layouts. For the 6-seat layout (Prime X), there are two spacious Captain’s Seats in the second row.

The premium features include Nappa leather seats, ventilated seats for the first and second rows, a 6-way powered driver’s seat with lumbar support, 4-way front passenger power seat with ‘Boss’ switch, dual-zone automatic air conditioning with air purifier, and dedicated air vents for second and third-row passengers.

The cargo space is generous, even with the third row in use. Fold the seats down and the volume expands up to 2,050 litres. For very large items or even bicycles, there are roof rails capable of supporting up to 75 kgs of weight.

ADAS not included
Unusually for a model in this segment, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist Systems) is not available. There are airbags and a basic package of active safety systems like ABS, traction control, etc but it is surprising that PROTON has chosen to leave out the ADAS suite (among other features ) which is very comprehensive in its other models.
