The export move establishes Malaysia as a strategic manufacturing and technology hub for GWM in ASEAN.
GWM Malaysia has not launched the WY G9 MPV in Malaysia yet but the locally-assembled model is already headed to Thailand, a significant achievement in cross-border industrial development. Signaling a strengthened regional commitment, this represents the next strategic phase in GWM’s ambition to build a robust regional supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem within ASEAN.
Confidence in Malaysia’s ability
The commencement of exports to Thailand highlights GWM’s confidence in Malaysia’s ability to support high-value automotive assembly, technology transfer and future export scalability. This initiative is expected to advance local manufacturing competitiveness, enhance vendor development, and elevate Malaysia’s position within GWM’s broader regional strategy.

“The shipment of the GWM WEY G9 to Thailand is a testament to the strong regional foundation we are building in ASEAN,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia. “Malaysia’s role as a strategic assembly hub allows us to support neighbouring markets with advanced New Energy Vehicle (NEV) products while deepening regional supply chain integration. This is an important step forward as we accelerate our presence across the region.”

The local assembly programme in Malaysia (at the EP Manufacturing Bhd plant in Melaka) continues to progress with deeper localisation, enhanced technical capabilities and talent development. These ongoing efforts not only boost Malaysia’s NEV capability but also reinforce GWM’s commitment to sustainable regional expansion.

“This is more than a logistical milestone. It is the beginning of a long-term roadmap that reinforces Malaysia’s position in GWM’s New Energy future,” added GWM Malaysia’s Managing Director, Cui Anqi.

Malaysian launch this week
The premium MPV, with GWM’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system, will be launched in Malaysia later this week. Bookings can be made at all authorised GWM dealerships nationwide for the G9, which has an expected price below RM300,000.
