JAECOO J5 to join SUV range in Malaysia soon

After launching the JAECOO J7 and J8 premium SUVs (both of which are assembled locally), over the past 12 months. OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia is completing the range with the J5. This compact B-segment crossover will be the entry-level representative to bring more Malaysians into the JAECOO family.

The J5 is a fresh new model, having been launched in Shanghai this year and Malaysia will be among the first few countries to have it this year. One version will initially be available with an estimated price of RM120,000.

The overall length of 4380 mm is similar to that of the Proton X50 but the J5 is marginally wider and taller. It also has a generous 2620 mm wheelbase, which allows for comfortable seating within. The 18-inch alloy wheels with 235/55 tyres contribute to the commanding stance.

The J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with the latest-generation intake integrated intercooling and integrated exhaust manifold cylinder head technologies. The output of 147 ps/210 Nm goes to the front wheels via a CVT.

The 5-seat interior follows the same design approach as its bigger brothers with a clean fascia. Though an entry-level model, OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia is making sure it has a high quality feel with in full faux leather upholstery and a ‘Human-Pet Friendly travel’ concept.

What’s pet-friendly?
The pet-friendliness aims at creating a comfortable and healthy environment for pets so they too enjoy every journey as much as their human friends. For instance, the vehicle’s air conditioning filter, with its powerful filtration capabilities, effectively blocks pet hair, ensuring that the air inside the car remains fresh and clean at all times. Even more thoughtful, the J5 is equipped with an intelligent temperature control system that automatically adjusts the cabin temperature based on real-time needs, allowing pets to enjoy a comfortable experience.

The materials are also kind to animals and won’t affect them while their durability means you won’t see scratches left by claws. For a healthier environment for both the pets and humans, there is an antibacterial health device that effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria.

The interior designers at JAECOO must be pet-lovers as we understand that there are pet-feeding devices and other accessories just for pets. It’s not known if they will be standard or optional features in the units sold in Malaysia. If your pet could talk, it would probably be pestering you to get a J5!

There’s also lots of space to carry gear for an outdoor adventure in the 480-litre boot. If more space is needed, the rear backrests can be folded down and expand the volume to 1,180 litres. Of course, this means that the rear seats can’t be used but your pet won’t mind that. The 60:40 division of the backrests allows for one person to sit so there is some flexibility.

Mobile karaoke lounge
The J5’s cabin can also become a mobile karaoke lounge as the audio system can emphasise vocal volume from the noise-cancelling microphone provided, while sound effects enhance the atmosphere that can reverberate with the rear subwoofer.

Another highlight of the J5 is a huge moonroof – at 1.45 square metres, it is said to be the largest in its class – which extends from above the rearview mirror all the way to the back. This should make the cabin feel even more spacious and hopefully, the glass has tinting that cuts out solar transmission.

Feedback is taken seriously
The J5, like the J7 and J8, show a lot of attention to customers’ (and pets) needs. According to Emily Lek, Vice-President of OMODA-JAECOO Malaysia, all feedback from customers is considered and even now, they are still getting feedback and where appropriate (and can be done quickly), changes will be made for the units sold in Malaysia. This is unlike the usual approach where any changes or improvements have to wait a few years till the facelift halfway through the model’s cycle.

“We’re very happy that our colleagues in China are receptive and always willing to accommodate requests for changes to ensure that the products we sell are the best that they can be. We welcome all feedback from customers who view the J5 at our event this weekend so please tell us what you like or don’t like,” she said.

OMODA | JAECOO Carnival
The J5, along with the J7, J8 PHEV and C9 PHEV, will be on display at the OMODA | JAECOO Carnival at Car Park 3, Desa ParkCity, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur from August 21 to 24. Test-drives of the J7 and J8 will be available, and the carnival atmosphere is further elevated with a wide selection of food and beverage offerings, kids’ play zones, alfresco outdoor spaces, and the PingMing Market. This is a cultural bazaar known as ‘the market for the people’, featuring a variety of culinary and artisanal delights.

“This Carnival is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to all our customers for their outstanding support, welcoming new ones into the world of attainable luxury, and educating the wider public about the benefits of next-generation New Energy Vehicle (NEV) technology,” said Ms Lek.
