Polestar 3 sets new Guinness World Record for range

When the first mass produced EV – the Nissan LEAF – was launched in 2010, the range was around 150 kms with a 24 kWh battery. With battery technology constantly advancing, more capacity is possible with higher density and along with other technological advancements, EVs can now go further before the driver needs to find a recharging station.

Automakers are constantly extending the range of electric vehicles, increasing the distance that a fully charged battery can allow the vehicle to travel. While recharging will be necessary eventually, the longer distance will help in reducing the concern called ‘range anxiety’ that is one of the factors that still make many hesitate to own an EV.

Polestar’s large electric SUV, the Polestar 3, recently broke the Guinness World Record for longest journey travelled by a production electric SUV on a single charge. Achieving 935.44 kms, the Long range Single motor variant took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete its journey which was done on public roads in the UK.

The attempt was carried out in mixed weather conditions, with driver changes every 3 hours to ensure alertness. The Polestar 3 easily met its WLTP figure of 706 kms with 20% of its battery capacity still available and delivered an extra 12.8 kms after showing 0% battery level . The efficiency was calculated at 12.1 kWh/100 kms.

The AA-supported run with the production-standard SUV was observed by an official from the Guinness World Records organisation. It was fully documented independently verified video footage, odometer readings, GPS readings, and battery level data. The vehicle received no modifications in preparation for the run and was on standard 20-inch wheels fitted with standard Michelin Sport 4 EV tyres.

“We are very proud to say we have a world record-holder in the Polestar family! This official Guinness World Record for range is another proof point that Polestar 3 is setting new standards. We will continue to push the boundaries of technology and electric performance,” said Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Note: As with fuel consumption in combustion engine cars, the range each driver can get with an EV will be influenced by variable factors such as driving style, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. Advertised ranges usually are based on running the vehicle according to an industry-recognised standard cycle so that there is bases for comparison.

The cycles (test procedures) are typically WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure); NEDC (New European Driving Cycle); CLTC (China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle); and the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). As each cycle has different methods, the results will be different. WLTP is presently regarded as being the more ‘realistic’ cycle.
