Isuzu vehicles have been on Malaysian roads from as far back as the 1980s, growing their presence rapidly as they demonstrated durability and reliability. While the brand has maintained leadership in the commercial vehicle segment for many years, it also has a strong presence in the pick-up truck segment with the Isuzu D-MAX.
Introduced shortly after the establishment of Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd in 2004, the D-MAX entered a segment that had been growing since the late 1990s when the government changed the regulations to permit pick-up trucks to be registered for private use. This meant that it could be used for daily transport as an alternative to passenger cars, and this saw the transformation of the role of the pick-up truck from mere workhorse to a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle for adventures.

Isuzu developed the D-MAX to meet the new role, without compromising on toughness, reliability. More importantly, it utilised proven powertrain technology that it was already noted for. With each generation of the D-MAX, the model was improved in many ways – design-wise as well as technologically – and has been one of the popular choices of Malaysian truck buyers.
All-new engine and transmission
The current generation is the third generation, introduced in 2021. This year, it received a significant update in the form of an all-new 2.2-litre turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine. This is not the usual evolutionary development but is a newly developed engine engineered for combustion efficiency, longevity and performance while reducing exhaust emissions with Euro-5 compliance.

While 163 ps of power is generated at 3,600 rpm, the more valuable performance for operators is maximum torque of 400 Nm being available from 1,600 rpm; even at 1,000 rpm, there’s already 255 Nm generated. The strong low-end muscle and mid-range flexibility give the Isuzu D-MAX the ability to easily handle loaded highway runs or driving over the roughest terrain.
Paired with the 2.2L Turbo Diesel Engine is a new 8-speed automatic transmission that represents a significant step forward in refinement and control. The closer gear ratios deliver smoother shifting, punchier low-end torque response, and lower highway rpm, translating into both greater efficiency and a more relaxed driving experience.
Off-road capability
Off-road capability remains the defining strength of the Isuzu D-MAX. The Terrain Command 4×4 system allows shifting while on the move between 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, allowing the driver to adapt instantly as surface conditions change. Complementing this is an electronic rear differential lock that delivers maximum traction on extremely muddy or uneven trails by locking the rear axle and ensuring power reaches both rear wheels even when one loses grip.

Rough Terrain Mode further increases capability through an electronic traction control system that redistributes power the moment wheelspin is detected, maintaining forward momentum across slippery surfaces without requiring constant driver intervention.

Water crossings are an inevitable part of off-road travel (and, lately, on some roads too!), and the Isuzu D-MAX tackles this with a class-leading 800 mm water-wading depth. This figure provides confidence when crossing streams or flooded sections of trail, allowing the vehicle to keep moving when other trucks might hesitate.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA) complete the off-road systems. Hill Descent Control maintains carefully managed speeds on steep downward slopes, letting the driver focus on guiding the vehicle rather than thinking about brake modulation constantly. Hill Start Assist prevents rollback on inclines, holding the vehicle briefly so the driver can transition smoothly from brake to throttle.
Proof in the Borneo Safari
The Borneo Safari has long been a ‘proving ground’ for the Isuzu D-MAX, where it has been a regular participant for many years. This year, an Isuzu D-MAX Auto Premium 2.2L 4×4 and Isuzu D-MAX 2.2L 4×4 Single Cab Auto will be used in the event. Both vehicles will be subjected to the punishing conditions of the Borneo Safari with its dense jungle, steep gradients, deep mud, and unpredictable water crossings.

Isuzu Malaysia is confident that even with the automatic transmission, it will complete the course just like its predecessors have each year. Once again, the performance and overall durability of the Isuzu D-MAX will be fully validated in the region’s premier extreme 4×4 off-road event.

The D-MAX experience
Behind the wheel of the Isuzu D-MAX Auto Premium 2.2L 4×4, the character of the new 2.2L Turbocharged Diesel Engine became evident right away. The moment the START button is pressed, a distant rumble reminded of the power lurking under the bonnet. On the move, generous sound insulation and other measures reduced noise and vibrations while maintaining effortless progress.
Each departure was assertive and brisk, something that not all pick-up trucks provide. In low-speed off-road situations on rough and uneven surfaces, the tighter ratios of the automatic transmission provided precise crawl control, allowing the driver to moderate power accurately.
Moving from High-range 2-wheel drive on a road into High-range 4-wheel drive for loose gravel or wet tracks takes only a moment. In most situations, the High range was fine and only when demanding climbs and descents were encountered was it necessary to select Low range to multiply torque.

With electronic controls, the active systems instantaneously responded to difficult situations. For instance, when trying to cross a very muddy section, the Rough Terrain mode together with the electronic rear differential optimised power distribution to the wheels and maintained grip and stability in the slippery conditions.
The combination of the 2.2L TD engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission offers a drivetrain that feels equally on the highway or deep in the jungle. Along with the high seating position and excellent all-round view, each journey was one that was enjoyable and fatigue-free.

No sacrifices in comfort
However, the impressive off-road capability does not mean the Isuzu D-MAX is an uncomfortable ‘tank’. Far from it, as the Isuzu D-MAX 2.2L 4×4 Auto Premium absolutely does not sacrifice everyday practicality or passenger comfort in any way for its hardcore character. The cabin has refined black combination leather seats that offer a premium tactile feel, anti-vibration elastic foam support, and the kind of long-distance comfort needed for multi-day expeditions or extended highway journeys.

The upholstery strikes a balance between durability and luxury, remaining supportive after hours behind the wheel while resisting the wear that comes with dusty or muddy conditions. A standard Tailgate Assist mechanism further ease and convenience by controlling the opening speed of the heavy tailgate and reducing the effort required to close it, a small but appreciated detail when loading or unloading gear after a long day on the trail.

Modern technology is equally well represented. There’s a 10-inch touchscreen display that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing seamless smartphone integration without cables. Navigation, music, and communication functions remain easily accessible, whether the vehicle is crawling through the jungle or cruising on the highway.
As safe as a passenger car
Safety and ADAS (driver-assistance systems) are comparable to modern passenger cars, and even more extensive than some other pick-up trucks in the market. Notable active safety systems include a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) which uses radar sensors; and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) which scans the area behind the vehicle when reversing, warning of approaching traffic in carparks or when exiting driveways.

The 360-degree Around View Monitor delivers bird’s-eye views and all-round awareness that is important for a long and large vehicle. Besides being able to choose view angles, the driver also has dynamic guidelines on the screen that will prove invaluable in tight urban parking situations and when positioning the truck precisely on narrow off-road trails.
Purpose and robust design
The overall design language of the latest Isuzu D-MAX Auto Premium 2.2L 4×4 remains purposeful and robust, with colour choices and refined detailing elevating the Auto Premium version well beyond pure workhorse status into the realm of lifestyle adventure vehicle. The stylish exterior presence is enhanced by eye-catching Inishmore Green and Obsidian Gray colour options.
These finishes give the Isuzu D-MAX a distinctive visual identity that stands out in any setting, reinforcing the sense that this is a pick-up truck designed for owners who value both capability and style.

Taken as a whole, it delivers a compelling value proposition built around its own proven strengths rather than being compared with other trucks on the market.
