20 years ago, when cars from Chinese automakers began to be subjected to international safety tests, their performance was poor. In one case in Germany, the results of a crash test were shocking. The general perception then was that Chinese cars were unsafe and poorly engineered.
But the Chinese automakers, especially those which were serious about becoming global players, learnt quickly and improved their designs, giving a lot more attention to safety, Today, when tested by affiliates of Global NCAP, which includes ASEAN NCAP, their scores are as good as the other global brands from Japan, Europe and Korea.
Chery, as the leading exporter of passenger vehicles from China (for 22 consecutive years), has worked hard to ensure that its vehicles are comparable in all aspects to the established global brands which can typically score 4 or 5 stars with their new models.

This is clearly shown with the latest announcement from ASEAN NCAP for the Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV which was launched a few months ago. The SUV scored a total of 94.68 points in 4 categories which qualified it for a full 5-star rating. Testing was done at the CAERI facility in China with a team from ASEAN NCAP observing and assessing the date obtained.
Impressive score
The TIGGO 7’s impressive score – well above the industry norm – was made up of 40.00 points for Adult Occupant Protection, 17.18 points for Child Occupant Protection, 20.00 points for Safety Assist, and 17.50 points for Motorcyclist Safety. Notably, the 40.00 points in the Adult Occupant Protection category was a ‘perfect score’.

Commending Chery for its ongoing commitment to regional vehicle safety standards, ASEAN NCAP also noted that the automaker has further distinguished itself by integrating Child Presence Detection technology in the TIGGO 7 PHEV. This system proactively alerts the driver to check the rear seats if the rear doors were opened prior to the start of a journey.
