Volvo EX90 now assembled locally with updated specs

Just 17 months ago, Volvo Car Malaysia launched the EX90 as an addition to its range of fully electric models. Today, it has launched an updated model… a rather short time-frame for a change although it could also be the influence of the Chinese brands which are known to have shorter product lifecycles.

The short time before an update has also been apparent in Europe. The model was launched in 2024 and in just two years, there’s an updated model. That’s rather different from earlier Volvos models which had long lifecycles and intermediate updates only came after a number of years.

Meaningful engineering changes
Nevertheless, this update is not cosmetic and brings meaningful engineering refinements to the flagship electric SUV. Positioned as the Swedish brand’s (but owned by China’s Geely) definitive software-driven family vehicle, the latest 7-seat EX90 gains high-voltage performance upgrades.

800V architecture
The most significant update is where the vehicle transitions to a high-efficiency 800V electrical architecture. By doubling the operating voltage over conventional 400V setups, the system draws significantly less current to deliver the same power output. This reduction in current minimizes internal resistance and heat build-up while allowing engineers to utilize thinner internal wiring, shedding crucial chassis weight.

The high-voltage system also supports higher power supply recharging, allowing the 106-kWh battery pack to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes (with a 350 kW DC fast charger). Under optimal conditions, the EX90 offers a claimed driving range of up to 617 kms.

Powering the vehicle is an updated Twin Motor All-Wheel Drive system which now generates a total output of 507 kW (680 hp), along with 870 Nm of torque.

Faster computing power
Safety remains central to every Volvo model and today’s models have Volvo’s Safe Space Technology suite. The SUV also gains a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin computer with 500 TOPS, enabling the centralized core computer to continuously analyze real-time telemetry and imagery from external sensors at quicker computing speeds.

The more advanced LiDAR sensor system that was in the 2025 model is no longer present. According to Chris Wailes, Managing Director of Volvo Car for Malaysia and Thailand, further development and use of LiDAR has been stopped. However, systems in earlier models which have it will remain fully functional.

Monitoring driver condition
Inside the typical Volvo cabin with Scandinavian themes, two IR sensors monitor the driver as part of the Driver Understanding System that helps detect distraction and impairment. Combined with external sensor data, the driver’s state of mind is assessed and intervention occurs when necessary.

Additionally, interior radars make up a full-cabin Occupant Sensing System that can sense sub-millimetre scale movements, such as the soft breathing of a life, to ensure that no loved one is left behind. 

As with all modern Volvos, over-the-air (OTA) software updates will be provided periodically. These updates refine active safety algorithms and vehicle functionality, ensuring the vehicle remains technologically current throughout its ownership lifecycle. No longer will owners have to buy a new car to enjoy some of the new or updated technologies introduced in later models.

Now assembled locally at Volvo’s own plant in Selangor, the EX90 price starts at RM428,888 (without insurance), which is RM14,000 less than the imported CBU model. The first 100 customers with confirmed orders will receive a rebate of up to RM25,000. Additionally, there’s also a complimentary AC wallbox for recharging at home or at the office.
