The compact crossover segment (or B-segment of the crossover market) has existed before the Proton X50 arrived in October 2020. Car-buyers wanted crossover SUVs but preferred a smaller size than the traditional ones, and many automakers quickly offered models.
When the X50 entered the market, its credentials had partly been ‘presented’ by the X70, already becoming a popular model in its segment. Very quickly, as is often the case with Proton models, the X50 raced to the top of the sales chart in its segment and has Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV for 5 consecutive years.

It is now 6 years since it was launched (with more than 177,000 units sold), during which time it received incremental updates in technology, design, and safety features.
To celebrate this sixth year, Proton has created the X50 Sport Edition (SE) which has special features but shares the equipment level of the Flagship version.
15 visual differences
The X50 SE has no less than 15 visual upgrades which create a bold darker, sportier presence. The exterior has a predominantly black finish highlighted by contrasting red accents, a popular theme of Proton’s designers.

Key changes include a black front upper garnish, black trim garnishes for the front and rear side ports, a black lower bumper finish, and 18-inch black alloy wheels. The SE is also fitted with custom front, side, and rear body skirts, with a Sport Edition badge to let everyone know this is a special X50.

Trim enhancements within
The cabin retains the space-efficient layout of the X50 but incorporates extra trim touches. These are black upholstery accented by red contrast stitching on the seats and steering wheel.

The front seatbacks bear ‘SPORT EDITION’ embroidery, complemented by bespoke floor mats. These mats utilize a Thermoplastic Elastomer construction, chosen for easy maintenance, quick drying, and good resistance to water.

All items tested
According to Proton, all the items added to the SE underwent more than 13,700 hours of component testing. The test procedures evaluated resistance to UV rays, corrosion, and long-term heat endurance to match local weather conditions.
As it is based on the Flagship version, it has the highest equipment level of the X50 range. Included is a 14.6-inch infotainment display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, integrated with the Proton Link 2.0 connected platform and voice command functionality in English and Bahasa Melayu.

1.5-litre turbocharged i-GT engine
Under the bonnet, the SE specs are the same as the X60 Flagship. Power comes from Proton’s i-GT 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which produces 181 ps/290 Nm. This goes to the front wheel through a7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Safety systems remain comprehensive, with 15 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions, a 360-degree camera system with a 180-degree transparent chassis view, and Auto Park Assist.

How much?
Proton has not indicated if this will be a limited edition, like the earlier X70 Sport Edition that had only 600 units. The price has also not been revealed so we can only speculate that it might be a similar RM2,500 extra over the X50 Flagship as the X70 SE was priced that way over the X70 Premium. At that time, Proton said that the actual value of the SE package was around RM6,000.
