Quick look
- The ‘dark side’ of Proton is becoming more dominant with another stealthy model having a black theme.
- The X70 Sport Edition is a limited edition and only 600 Malaysians will get to own one.
Looks like black is the ‘in-thing’ at Proton these days. Following the success of previous dark-themed special editions for other models, the Malaysian automaker is now bringing that same theme to the X70 as well.
It is a move that acknowledges a growing segment of buyers who want their SUV to look more aggressive and stealthy, and the bold black theme does just that.

Bookings accepted from today
Proton has created a Sport Edition of the X70 (price to be revealed on April 16) and only 600 Malaysians will get to own one as it is a limited edition. While the price will only be known on Thursday, you can view the Sport Edition at some Proton showrooms from today and also place a booking so you don’t miss out on this exclusive model.
The X70 Sport Edition has the same Quartz Black finish that is now a permanent choice in the X50’s colour range. Based on the high-spec Premium version, it comes with a bespoke bodykit that includes new front, side, and rear skirts. These give the X70 a noticeably lower and more planted stance, with blacked-out 19-inch alloy wheels on each corner.

Inside, there are exclusive Sport Edition logos embroidered on the front seats. The contrast red stitching on the steering wheel, seats, and front armrest add a sporty feel and look.

Evolution with meaningful improvements
Since its debut in 2018, the X70 has evolved in various ways. It’s hard to believe it has been nearly 8 years since the Geely-Proton partnership brought forth the automaker’s first SUV. In that, we’ve seen the transition from CBU (completely bult-up) units to locally assembled (CKD) versions. Technical improvements have also been significant, from the introduction of the smooth quick-shifting7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), and the switch from the 3-cylinder engine to a 4-cylinder one which is made locally.

With each update, Proton engineers have also drawn on their experience in chassis tuning (gained from the Lotus Engineering days) to make the X70 more suited to the preferences of Malaysian drivers. The ride and handling characteristics, for which Proton is often praised, have been refined along with meaningful reductions in NVH (noise, vibrations and harshness).

“With the introduction of the X70 Sport Edition, we are building on that strong legacy by giving the model a fresh new personality that appeals to customers who want added style and distinction in their SUV. It is a celebration of how far the X70 has taken us, and how it continues to evolve with market expectations,” he said.
