MG Motor Malaysia enters third year ready to accelerate further

Quick look

  • MG Motor Malaysia achieved a 57% sales surge in the first quarter of 2026, continuing the trend of growth right from its start two years ago.

  • Aiming to be a serious player, MG Motor Malaysia has started local assembly with the first model being the fully electric MGS5.

MG Motor Malaysia, managed by SAIC Motor Malaysia, has been among the more serious players among the newcomers over the past few years. Although the strength of the MG legacy on buyers is uncertain, the product line that the brand has offered has certainly drawn many.

Initially importing its vehicles in CBU (completely built-up) form which was duty-exempt (for EVs), the company was clear about its long-term presence in the market. To become a significant player, it needed to assemble locally and that’s started this year.

First locally-assembled MG EV
In March 2026, the MGS5 EV rolled out at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) plant in Melaka as the brand’s first locally-assembled fully electric vehicle in the Malaysian market.

The addition of the locally-assembled model will certainly help accelerate MG sales which have shown a 57% increase in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the final quarter of 2025. The volume, compared to the same period in 2025, has also increased by 39%.

Future development
Looking toward future development, the brand is prioritizing network accessibility and aftersales infrastructure to be ready for the larger owner base. New 3S centres are scheduled to open in Kuantan and Rawang, expanding MG’s reach across key regions.

“Q1 has been a meaningful and encouraging start to the year for MG in Malaysia,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “From product recognition to the local roll-out of the MGS5 EV, these milestones reflect the strength of our product line-up and our long-term commitment to the Malaysian market.”

“As we move further into 2026, we remain focused on delivering compelling products, strengthening customer engagement, and continuing to expand our footprint through innovation and localisation,” he added.
