Mercedes-Benz VLE begins new generation of electric people-movers

Quick look

  • The VLE is the first Mercedes-Benz people-mover built on the dedicated VAN.EA platform, replacing the boxy designs V-Class with a streamlined form.

  • Inside, there is S-Class ambience for the top versions which can be personalised as luxury shuttles.

‘V’ has traditionally been the identifier for the people-movers or large luxury MPVs of Mercedes-Benz which began as the V-Class in the mid-1990s. There have been three generations (sold as Vito/Viano in some places and Metris in North America) and included an electric EQV version.

First model on VAN.EA platform
Recently, Mercedes-Benz introduced the new VLE as a new generation of passenger vans and the first to be built on the dedicated VAN.EA platform. Fully electric, the VLE aims to bridge the gap between traditional luxury limousines and the functional versatility of multi-purpose vehicles.

Modular seating
The interior focuses on a modular seating arrangement that can be configured for 5 – 8 occupants. A new concept called ‘Roll & Go’ utilizes manually-operated seats equipped with integrated wheels. These units can be moved along tracks, locked in various positions, or removed entirely to expand cargo capacity to a maximum of 4,078 litres.

MBUX Superscreen
A notable interior feature is the optional MBUX Superscreen which, Like the S-Class, has three distinct displays under a single glass surface. This includes a 10.25-inch driver display alongside 14-inch screens for both the central console and the front passenger, the latter of which allows for independent media streaming or gaming.

The passenger experience in the rear is further enhanced by a retractable 31.3-inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution. Stored in the headliner when not in use, this display can be deployed for video conferencing via an integrated 8-megapixel camera or for cinematic entertainment. Complementing the visual tech is a 22-speaker Burmester 3D Surround Sound System that utilizes Dolby Atmos technology to provide immersive audio throughout the cabin.

Technological intelligence extends to a new virtual assistant powered by generative AI and large language models like Google Gemini. This system is designed to handle complex, multi-turn conversations and even possesses a short-term memory to better understand user intent.

Additionally, the navigation system developed as part of the partnership between Google and Mercedes-Benz is one of the first integrations of Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent for in-vehicle conversation services with Google Maps. It features ‘Electric Intelligence’ to calculate the most efficient routes based on real-time traffic and necessary charging intervals.

The cabin environment is regulated by 3 independent climate control systems designed to reach desired temperatures quickly in extreme climates. Passengers have access to various centre console options, including a high-end version that features temperature-controlled storage, UV disinfection, and a fragrance generator. Natural light comes in through a fixed Sky View panoramic glass roof that extends from the B-pillar to the rear of the vehicle.

355 kms in 15 minutes recharge
With 800V system architecture, the VLE can charge at very high speeds, recharging the 155 kWh NMC battery with up to 355 kms within 15 minutes, it is claimed. A fully charged battery is said to provide a range of more than 700 kms, and to maximize efficiency, the all-wheel drive system employs a Disconnect Unit that only engages the rear motor when additional traction or power is required. Power outputs of up to 305 kW are available with the top version.

Future updates to the model line will include the introduction of 800V models utilizing lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry. These variants will offer a usable energy content of 80 kWh, providing a more accessible entry point for VLE customers.

The vehicle utilizes AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent damping to manage ride quality across various road surfaces. This system includes level control that can adjust the ride height by up to 40 mm to improve ground clearance or facilitate easier entry and exit. To optimize efficiency, the suspension can also use GPS data from Google Maps to automatically lower the vehicle and reduce aerodynamic drag at higher speeds.

Manoeuvrability is aided by 7-degree rear-axle steering which reduces the curb-to-curb turning circle to 10.9 meters, making it as easy to turn as a CLA. The vehicle includes trailer stabilization software and a manoeuvring assistant to help manage heavy loads.

Safety systems are managed by a comprehensive sensor suite consisting of 10 cameras, 5 radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. In the event of a severe collision, up to 11 airbags will deploy around the cabin which has an exceptionally rigid passenger cell.

New standard for people-movers
The VLE represents the start of a broader transition for Mercedes-Benz vans as they move towards a fully electric portfolio of flexible vehicles for families and leisure-active
customers to exclusive shuttles. By combining the traditional attributes of luxury transport with the flexibility required for modern use, the VLE attempts to set a new standard for high-occupancy electric mobility.
