The Jaguar Type 01 has been revealed in its entirety, marking the beginning of a new era for the British automaker as the first production model to lead a sweeping brand overhaul. Intended to transition the historic nameplate entirely toward an electric future, it has been the subject of controversies surrounding the stylistic repositioning and marketing campaigns.

Bold and long
The dramatic shift in design language has been debated widely, with Jaguar’s top management defending the bold change as a necessary measure to capture younger, wealthier customers. Beyond market reception, practical discussions have surrounded the car’s substantial physical footprint, measuring over 5.2 metres long and 2 metres wide.

The exterior of the Type 01 establishes its presence through an exuberant modernist design philosophy characterized by a low roofline, an extended rear overhang, a short front overhang, and a long bonnet.

Riding on standard 23-inch wheels, the 4-door Grand Tourer has an 898 mm ‘luxury gap’ between the front axle centre and the front door, mirroring the proportional layout of models like the E-type.

The aerodynamic profile achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, aided by active aerodynamic elements including front Active Vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler that shifts angles based on vehicle speed.

The ‘Impossible Panel’
Manufacturing the body required pushing industrial boundaries, notably through the production of the rear quarter panel — referred to as the ‘Impossible Panel’ — which undergoes a 6-stage pressing process across 5 planes. Frameless doors integrate flush with the body utilizing a compressed-radius hemming technique that eliminates visible seals and cosmetic trims, while the front fascia employs slim digital LED headlights.

Inside the Type 01
Inside, the cabin features a continuous longitudinal brass-effect anodized aluminium spine that divides the space into four individual seating positions. Driver instrumentation centres on a 24-inch single glass OLED screen running a new Jaguar Infotainment system, flanked by a secondary 7-inch touchscreen. A 38-speaker Meridian audio system incorporates a full-width Panoramic Soundbar and Sensory Audio front seats.

Jaguar Electric Architecture
The Type 01 has been built around Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), a bespoke, dedicated EV platform developed exclusively for Jaguar’s new era of ultra-luxury, high-performance electric vehicles. Designed and engineered from a clean sheet (or disk), rather than adapted from an internal combustion engine platform, JEA focuses on extreme rigidity, advanced high-voltage systems, and distinct proportions tailored for luxury GT vehicles.

The bodywork is constructed from 73% aluminium to achieve exceptional torsional rigidity. This rigidity forms the foundation for precise handling, high safety standards, and optimal cabin refinement.

3-motor drivetrain
Propulsion is handled by a 3-motor drivetrain consisting of a 260 kW motor on the front axle and twin 310 kW motors at the rear, powered by fast-switching silicon carbide inverters derived from the brand’s Formula E racing involvement. The system generates up to 757 kW (1,029 ps)/1,365 Nm, taking the Type 01 from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 second, and from 100 km/h to 180 km/h in 4 seconds.

Torque reaction times are managed within one millisecond via integrated traction management software, and patent-pending Inverter Deactivation Technology can automatically decouple the rear axle during highway cruising to optimize efficiency.

The chassis utilizes a double-wishbone front and integral link rear suspension set-up paired with Dynamic Air Suspension, switchable volume air springs, twin-valve active dampers monitoring the road 500 times a second, and All-Wheel Steering that turns the rear wheels up to six degrees.

Electricity storage is with an 118 kWh usable lithium-ion battery pack (shown above) with side-terminal prismatic cells. The battery integrates directly into the chassis structure, featuring a patent-pending structural high-voltage junction box that doubles as a front suspension strut brace.
850V electrical system, 720 kms
The 850V electrical system is said to provide an anticipated total driving range of up to 720 kms. When recharged with the maximum of 350kW DC power supply, it is claimed to take 13 minutes to get a range of up to 321 kms.

Handcrafted production of the Type 01 is done entirely in the UK. Orders will be accepted in early 2027 with starting prices of £130,000 (about RM703,000), though most customers would pay more with personalisation options added. First deliveries are planned to start from the second half of 2027.
