Driving the Future: The Legacy and Evolution of Mitsubishi Motors in Malaysia

Malaysia’s automotive industry is over 50 years old, having started in the 1960s when the government saw the industry as a catalyst for industrialisation, just as it was in Japan and Germany in the post-war years. As the country made the transition from an agrarian economy to an industrial one, it needed the investments and transfer of technology from foreign companies.

Japanese automakers were responsive; they did not regard Malaysia as merely a consumer market to sell their cars but were willing to share their technologies and help develop the industry. Mitsubishi Motors was among those that came in and invested in local assembly as well as developed local expertise to make cars. They introduced manufacturing processes that would lay the groundwork for what would eventually become a sophisticated automotive ecosystem. This showed how the Japanese commitment to the country was rooted in long-term stability, rather than short-term gain.

How perceptions changed
It is a historical irony that in the 1960s, Japanese vehicles were often regarded as being flimsy (with ‘Milo tin’ bodies), compared to the European models. However, this perception was only for a short while because the vehicles of Mitsubishi Motors and other brands proved to be durable, reliable and economical to run – attributes which were ideally suited for consumers just ascending the economic ladder and motorisation.

This advertisement in 1976 shows how Mitsubishi Motors overcame early negative perception about the durability of Japanese cars by putting them through tough rallies and winning. In later years, its name would be among the legends of the Dakar Rally.

By the late 1970s, the Malaysian public’s perception of Japanese cars had undergone a total reversal. Mitsubishi vehicles became more popular in the market with models such as the Lancer and Galant demonstrating engineering durability, high fuel efficiency and even a good measure of performance. A Mitsubishi car became ‘good as gold’ in the used car market as Japanese cars maintained strong resale values (and still do).

As the economy grew and sales increased, Mitsubishi Motors went further by providing its expertise to Malaysia for its National Car project in 1984. The automaker became involved in this significant chapter in Malaysian automotive history by becoming a partner in the project and providing the technology and technical mentorship required to develop the first Malaysian car.

Mitsubishi Motors is not only in Malaysia to sell cars but also to contribute to the development of the auto industry. Assembly of some products transfers technology to the local industry.
