Quick look

The KP31 will be the world’s first dual-cab pick-up truck to pair a diesel engine with a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) system.
-
It might not appear in Malaysia as MITI has a regulatory roadblock preventing the entry of new truck models.
Chery has a new pick-up truck which will be launched before the year ends, and it features an innovative plug-in hybrid electric powertrain with a diesel engine. The advantage of using a diesel engine is the high torque and range with reduced emissions of electrification, a combination that has largely been absent from the global truck market.

The automaker is now previewing the new truck as the KP31 concept in Australia where Chinese trucks are increasing their presence.
Class-leading thermal efficiency
The powertrain uses a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine with class-leading thermal efficiency of 47%, positioning it as a highly efficient internal combustion component within the hybrid system.
Chery claims this set-up will be 10% more fuel-efficient than the average diesel powertrain, addressing a key consumer demand for reduced running costs. Considerable attention has been paid to refinement, with the production version targeting a 30% reduction in vibration levels compared to conventional diesel powertrains.

From a utility standpoint, the KP31 concept demonstrates serious intent. It boasts a competitive 1000-kg payload and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, numbers that align it directly with established players in the dual-cab segment.

Production model to be shorter
The vehicle’s rugged aesthetic, complete with chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres, a snorkel, and a matte grey finish, shows its readiness for demanding tasks. Its substantial dimensions, measuring 5610 mm long, 1920 wide, and 1925 mm tall, give an imposing look. However, it is known that the production model will see a slight reduction in length to 5450 mm.

Blocked from entering Malaysia?
Unfortunately, we’re unlikely to see the PHEV truck in Malaysia as there’s a MITI policy (actually, it’s not new) that does not allow the entry of any more new truck models. However, whatever models are currently sold can continue to be sold. That’s why BYD, though having shown the Shark 6 to the public at its Tech Discovery event, is not talking about it and only focussing on its technology.
But with a new MITI minister and the ministry often telling potential investors that ‘customised incentives’ can be negotiated, Chery’s RM2.2 billion Smart Auto Industrial Park project in north Selangor might allow the KP31 in if it is built there.
