While much of automotive news today is dominated by the Chinese auto industry and its stream of new models, the third largest auto market (fourth in production) after China and the USA continues to also advance. This is the Indian market which, in 2025, had around 4.3 million new vehicle sales.
While Maruti Suzuki is the dominant manufacturer with 40% market share, second-placed Mahindra & Mahindra has seen fast growth in recent years with its SUV-focussed model range.
Based on Global Pik Up concept
Its latest model is the Scorpio Lifestyler, based on the Global Pik Up concept which was displayed in Cape Town, South Africa in August 2023.

The model, which is now entering production, is part of a structured effort by the automaker to secure a foothold in the global midsize lifestyle pick-up truck market.
Designed in India
The vehicle was designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio in Mumbai, while engineering and technical development were executed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.
Built on Mahindra’s next-generation body-on-frame platform, the truck has been engineered to meet international crash safety and durability benchmarks, catering to both dual-use commercial requirements and recreational buyers.

Pick-up + SUV
From a styling perspective, the vehicle attempts to blend traditional pick-up utility with passenger SUV comfort. At launch, Mahindra has shown 3 distinct design directions for the model: the Valley Edition finished in Artemis Grey, tailored toward utility and executive leisure; the Reef Edition in Aquareef, oriented toward outdoor recreation; and the Trail Edition in Sahara Beige, tailored for off-road environments.

“The Scorpio Lifestyler is inspired by how our customers work, play and explore. Together, the three versions express our vision of a pick-up that celebrates individuality while remaining rooted in capability, authenticity and the freedom to explore without limits,” said Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer.
According to Dr Velusamy R, President of Mahindra’s Automotive Business, the new model was developed from the outset on creating a globally viable product utilizing the company’s established chassis engineering capabilities. The architecture is intended to balance structural rigidity for heavy payload duties with refined ride characteristics for everyday passenger transport.

Built on our advanced next-generation body-on-frame architecture, it has been engineered to deliver the capability, durability, safety and refinement demanded by customers around the world,” he said.

To be called just Lifestyler in overseas markets, shipments are scheduled to start in April 2027. Mahindra is targeting established pick-up regions such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the broader African markets, the Middle East, and Latin America.

The intention is to establishing a consistent product presence across export destinations besides also expanding the lifestyle pick-up segment in India.
Mahindra in Malaysia
Mahindra was in the Malaysian market in the mid-2000s, with the Scorpio SUV imported and sold by USF-HICOM, a unit in the DRB-HICOM Group. However, after a brief period of sales, the brand faded away and although there were plans for local assembly, these too never followed through.
