Initially available in Malaysia, Japan, and parts of Europe, the new engine oils will be available in China, Indonesia, and Thailand by the end of 2026.
PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI), the global lubricants manufacturing and marketing arm of PETRONAS, has started distributing its next-generation PETRONAS Syntium engine oil range. The updated lubricant portfolio features revised formulations designed to comply with the latest API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 industry standards, replacing the previous generation of products.
4 variants
Leveraging technical data and experience derived from Formula One activities alongside the company’s Fluid Technology Solutions framework, the revised range prioritizes engine protection, thermal management, and fuel efficiency. Rather than utilizing a single multi-application formulation, PLI has structured the updated portfolio into 4 distinct, application-specific variants targeting different engine architectures and operating conditions.

For high-performance applications, Syntium Supreme incorporates CoolTech+ technology. According to laboratory testing against standard baseline metrics, this oil reduces component wear and demonstrates a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 13% by exceeding the established ACEA C5 fuel economy boundaries.
Vehicles equipped with Japanese powertrains are best served by Syntium Supreme GLV2. Bearing formal JASO GLV-2 approval, this variant is engineered for high shear stability under high-load conditions. Field trial data collected over a 12,000-km evaluation period under real-world driving conditions indicated a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 19%, when comparing a 0W-20 JASO GLV2a formulation against an API SQ/ILSAC GF-7 reference oil.
For conventional passenger cars operating in daily commuting conditions, Syntium Prime is recommended. This oil uses Active Defense technology to maintain viscosity stability and component protection across variable thermal cycles.
Specially for hybrids
Syntium Hybrid is specifically engineered to address the distinct operating parameters of hybrid electric powertrains. Designated as CoolTech-H, the formulation provides targeted lubrication during frequent engine stop-start sequences and remains effective at the lower internal operating temperatures characteristic of hybrid vehicle usage.
“The new PETRONAS Syntium range marks a defining step in advancing lubricant innovation, delivering uncompromising quality solutions to workshops and motorists across Malaysia and Asia. Powered by next-generation formulations aligned with the latest API SQ standard, it enhances fuel efficiency and engine performance, empowering motorists with cutting-edge technology that delivers excellence in every drive,” said Noorhana Abdul Habib, Regional Managing Director for Asia at PLI.

The updated PETRONAS Syntium range has initially launched in Malaysia, Japan, and selected European markets. Distribution is scheduled to expand across the broader Asia-Pacific region over the next several months, with availability projected at PETRONAS AutoExpert facilities and authorized dealer networks in China, Indonesia, and Thailand before the end of 2026.
