202x Proton Saga Cross

Over the weekend, our friend Theottle had a dream about a ‘cross’ version of the latest Proton Saga. Feeling it would be a good variant to add to the range of the popular model, he came up with this proposal which he would like to offer to Proton for consideration. What do you think? Should Proton consider such a variant?

The Isuzu VehiCROSS stood out among SUVs in the late 1990s. Only a small volume was produced using low-cost ceramic dies for stamping the body panels.

The first use of the term ‘Cross’ was probably by Isuzu with the Vehicross, a small SUV produced between 1997 and 2001. It was built on the chassis of the Trooper. The low production run (around 5,960 units) was possible by using low-cost ceramic stamping dies. It had a unique design for its time and the rugged, distinctive, and durable black plastic cladding was a key design feature, often mistaken for a fully composite body. This feature would be adopted in modern ‘cross’ versions that would appear many years later.

We checked the used car market and found 2 units listed on Mudah. One is a 1997 model with a price of RM78,700 while the owner of the other 1998 model must be hoping to find someone who really wants a VehiCROSS and is willing to pay RM139,800. Both have 3.2-litre V6 engines.
