Although Hyundai vehicles have been assembled in Malaysia since the 1990s, the roll-out of the latest Hyundai Staria is considered as the first locally-assembled Hyundai model for Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMM), the local subsidiary of the Korean automaker.
The Staria production is done at Sime Motors-owned Inokom Corporation in Kedah, which has been assembling for the brand since the 1990s. For a brief period in the early 2000s, Hyundai models such as the Elantra and Sonata were also assembled at the Oriental Assemblers plant in Johor.

“The commencement of local production for the Hyundai STARIA is more than just a production achievement. It represents Hyundai’s confidence in Malaysia as an important market and a growing hub for future assembly,” said Eric Lee, President, Hyundai Motor Malaysia.
Contributing to local economy
Working with Inokom, HMM has made investments in additional production facilities which will also contribute meaningfully to the local economy. HMM is also committed to fostering stronger supply chains and supporting the nation’s industrial ecosystem. The brand positions itself not only as a mobility provider, but also as a long-term collaborator in Malaysia’s economic development journey.
Commenting on the partnership, Sui Keng Huat, Managing Director of Inokom, said: “From humble beginnings, we have grown into a trusted assembly partner within Hyundai’s global network. Every vehicle produced here is crafted with precision, care and in full compliance with Hyundai’s global standards – driven entirely by 100% Malaysian talent.”
