The Proton e.MAS 5 has officially been launched, joining the e.MAS 7 as the Malaysian automaker’s second fully electric model. Although the early units were imported from China, the e.MAS 5 is now being assembled at the dedicated EV factory within the PROTON manufacturing complex in Tanjung Malim, Perak, alongside the e.MAS 7.
Before launch, the estimated price range was RM60,000 to RM80,000 and when the confirmed prices flashed on the screen at Sentul Depot in Kuala Lumpur, it really surprised and delighted everyone present: RM59,800 for the Prime version and RM72,800 for the Premium version.
Save another RM3.000
And to add the proverbial icing to the cake, PROTON CEO Dr. Li Chunrong announced that there would be a RM3,000 rebate given to those who buy an e.MAS 5 before the end of 2025. That makes the e.MAS 5 cost as low as RM56,800 (but excluding insurance), which had some people thinking that not only should they buy one of the EVs but two!
PROTON’s aim is to make EVs affordable enough that many will switch to them and this pricing will certainly draw many to do so. It’s a repeat of the days of the original Saga, which cost under RM18,000 and was the cheapest new sedan in the market.
Over 5,000 orders
Since opening for bookings at the beginning of October, PROTON has received over 5,000 orders and this will surely increase very quickly. The EV factory has an initial annual capacity of 20,000 units (for two models) and the plan was to progressively increase to 45,000 units in coming years. If the high demand remains consistent, PROTON will have to revise its time-frame and even plan for additional investment to expand capacity earlier.
As with every model it has launched in recent time, PROTON also adds another ‘topping’ for early buyers. There’s a launch rebate worth up to RM8,000. This includes RM2,000 for deregistration of a non-roadworthy vehicle when buying the e.MAS 5; first 5 years of unlimited data for the infotainment system; interest rate of 1.98% from Proton Commerce (worth RM1.700); home charger (worth RM1,500); and a trade-in rebate of RM1,000.
Buyers can choose from 5 colours – Marble Cream, Quartz Rose, Moonstone White, Graphite Silver and Slate Grey. Marble Cream and Quartz Rose are exclusively for the Premium version which will also have an Alabaster White interior. For the other 3 colours, the interior colour will be Flint Grey.
