Despite the influx of newcomers in the market, sales of Toyota vehicles have remained consistent, reflecting the strength of the brand which has built its reputation on reliability, durability and good resale values.
With almost 8,000 vehicles delivered in March, the cumulative volume for the first quarter of 2025 reached 19,944 units. This maintains Toyota in the leading position among non-national brands, which it has held for a number of years.
Electrification with hybrid electric technology
As part of its multi-pathway strategy to reduce carbon emissions, UMW Toyota Motor has been promoting electrification through hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology. This technology, pioneered for mass production vehicles by Toyota in 1997, was first offered to Malaysians in 2009 with the Prius, followed by the Prius c in 2012. In 2015, UMW Toyota Motor began assembling the Camry Hybrid locally.

Today, the electrified Toyota range in Malaysia consists of the Camry Hybrid Electric (priced from RM248,800), Innova Zenix Hybrid Electric (from RM202,000), Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport (from RM148,800) and Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric (from RM140,800).
Consumers get to choose
Toyota’s multi-pathway approach gives consumers a choice when buying their vehicles. Those who may not be ready to go fully electric and prefer the benefits of HEV technology – especially the self-charging system – can still help in reducing carbon emissions as the technology reduces fuel consumption as well as emissions.

Since its debut in 2021, the locally-assembled Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric has been the most popular HEV model in the Toyota range. To date, over 23,000 units have been sold in Malaysia and being a SUV, it is also among the more popular models in the market.
For peace of mind, the battery pack of the Toyota HEV models has an 8-year/unlimited mileage warranty. UMW Toyota Motor’s warranty package includes the Inverter and Power Management Control ECU for the same length of time.

“As demand continues to grow, we remain focused on offering mobility solutions that are both forward-thinking and relevant to Malaysian drivers. Hybrid electric technology stands out as an essential stepping stone in our multi-pathway strategy toward carbon neutrality, striking a balance between performance, efficiency, and accessibility,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
