The price of the locally-assembled electrified crossover is unchanged from before, ie RM148,800.
In 2026, it looks like UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is stepping up with the promotion of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which Toyota has long experience with. In fact, the Japanese automaker was the first in the world to introduce a mass-produced HEV sedan in the late 1990s. Since then, it has continued to advance and improve the technology and included it for almost every model in its range.

In Malaysia, UMWT began selling HEVs 14 years ago with the Prius and then assembled the Camry Hybrid locally. In 2021, the company took a big step to prepare for electrification on a wider scale by building a brand new factory that would have dedicated HEV assembly. This year, it has extended the HEV ecosystem with the local assembly of lithium-ion batteries as well.

The first HEV model from the new factory at Bukit Raja, near Klang in Selangor was the Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric, launched in January 2022. This was later joined by the Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport with a sportier image. Since then, UMWT has added the Vios HEV to its local-assembled electrified range.

For 2026, the Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport receives updates said to ‘respond directly to evolving customer expectations, offering greater presence, comfort, and engagement while preserving the efficiency and ease of ownership’.
The latest Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport features a series of technical refinements focused on chassis dynamics and efficiency of the 4th generation hybrid system. As before, it is powered by a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC engine (2ZR-FXE) utilizing the Atkinson cycle. This internal combustion unit is integrated with an electric motor that generates 53 kW/163 Nm, while the engine output is 98 ps/142 Nm.

Power is delivered to the front wheels via an E-CVT (Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission) that optimizes the torque split between the engine and the motor. One advantage of a HEV is that it can also be driven on just electric power for short distances (depending on the battery level).
The hybrid system employs a high-voltage battery pack with a capacity of 6.5 Ah. This battery is recharged when necessary as the vehicle is running, so the driver never has to look for a charging station.
Energy recovery through a regenerative braking mechanism, which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during deceleration, also provides supplementary recharging. Only petrol needs to be added periodically, and that fuel is more readily available than charging stations.
A primary technical differentiator for the GR Sport version and the standard HEV version is the -tuned suspension system. The MacPherson struts at the front and the rear torsion beam have been recalibrated with stiffer spring rates and specialized shock absorbers. These modifications are engineered to minimize body roll and improve lateral stability during high-speed cornering.

To further sharpen steering response, the 2026 model includes performance bracing added to the underbody. This structural reinforcement increases the overall rigidity of the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, reducing chassis flex and allowing the suspension geometry to remain consistent under heavy mechanical loads.
For the GR Sport variant, the electric power steering mapping has been retuned to provide a more weighted feel and precise feedback. This calibration is intended to enhance the driver’s connection to the road surface, particularly in urban environments.
Technical updates to the exterior include a functional redesign of the front grille and foglamp surrounds to optimize airflow. The addition of front and rear skidplates, along with refined side moldings, serves to manage underbody air turbulence. These aerodynamic adjustments contribute to vehicle stability at higher speeds and help maintain a lower drag coefficient.

The 2026 model utilizes Bi-LED headlamps with an integrated sequential turn signal system. These units automatically switch between high and low beams based on oncoming traffic (or absence of it). At the rear, the LED lamps use a ‘light curtain; design to provide uniform illumination and improved visibility for following vehicles in adverse weather conditions.

The 2026 update also introduces a fully digital 12.3-inch Multi-Information Display. This high-resolution panel allows for customizable layouts and provides real-time data on hybrid system energy flow, tyre pressure, and safety system status. The central interface is a 10.1-inch touchscreen that supports wireless smartphone integration and 3D Panoramic View monitoring.

The cabin architecture incorporates high-damping materials within the roof and dashboard structures to reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels. Ergonomic updates include an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a 6-degree recline function for the rear seats. The use of specialized GR-specific synthetic materials and stitching on contact points is designed to withstand higher wear in performance-oriented driving.

The crossover is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense suite, which uses a monocular camera and millimetre-wave radar to scan the road ahead. Key technical features include the Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with all-speed tracking, and Lane Tracing Assist.

Comfort in the cabin is maintained through a dual-zone automatic air-conditioning system. This system is technically optimized for the HEV powertrain, utilizing an electric compressor that can operate independently of the engine. This ensures the cabin remains cooled even when the vehicle is in EV mode or stationary at traffic lights. In earlier EVs, the cooling would be reduced in such situations.

“For decades, Malaysians have placed their trust in Toyota for quality, durability, and peace of mind. The Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport carries that legacy forward, earning its place as one of the leading hybrid SUVs in Malaysia by delivering dependable efficiency, confident everyday driving, and a design that resonates with modern urban lifestyles. With the enhanced 2026 update, we have further refined the Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport to better serve how Malaysians live and move, from daily commutes to family journeys while continuing to support Toyota’s commitment to reliable and responsible mobility,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
The enhanced Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport is available nationwide at all authorised Toyota showrooms, with no change in pricing. For peace of mind, owners get a 5-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and a dedicated Hybrid Electric system 8-year warranty covering the hybrid battery, inverter, and power management control unit. Those who plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time (as many Toyota owners do) can extend the warranty for a further 2 years.
