Just three years ago, the idea of driving an EV from Singapore to Bangkok would be considered risky. The charging station network was in its early stages although priority was given to setting stations along the 772-km North-South Expressway.
The 1,800-km drive from the southern tip of the peninsular to Bangkok was possible, but required careful planning to ensure that when recharging was necessary, it would be possible to find a charging station.

In 2026, planning is still needed but ‘range anxiety’ is greatly reduced as there are over 60 charging stations along the N-S expressway, of which over 40 are DC fast-chargers that can recharge a battery pack in the time it takes you to finish a cup of coffee (EV model-dependent).
Tesla has been among the contributors to the development of the charging network and with the opening of its own V4 Supercharging station at AEON Mall Kinta City in Ipoh, Perak, there’s now a fast-charging intermediate stop without requiring major deviations from the primary route.
Location requested by Tesla owners
The deployment in Perak was identified as a priority location through direct input from Tesla owners, who suggested addressing a critical spatial gap in northern Perak.
The station has 4 V4 Supercharging bays which can provide peak DC charging rates of up to 250 kW. At maximum throughput, EVs such as the Model 3 and Model Y can ‘fill’ approximately 311 kms of range in 15 minutes in optimum charging conditions.
The AEON Mall Kinta City site is the first Supercharging site in the region to integrate Starlink (an Elon Musk-owned company) satellite connectivity, designed to maintain data terminal communication and billing processing during operational uptime. The facility operates on a pay-per-use structure aligned with Tesla’s standard regional pricing strategy.
Region-wide support
Besides its own charging station network, cross-border travellers are also supported by Tesla’s regional service policies which standardise warranty access, service diagnostics, and cellular connectivity across Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
This operational continuity allows owners to cross national boundaries without encountering software restrictions or regional servicing discrepancies.
With this latest installation, Tesla’s overall charging infrastructure in Malaysia now numbers 21 Supercharging stations with a total of 92 bays. Additionally, there are by 18 Destination Charging sites with 78 charging points nationwide. The Destination Chargers are more suited for overnight charging or when at shopping malls as they provide lower-output AC power supply.
