Proton Saga 40th Anniversary Edition

Theottle, Master Car Designer of the Digital World, has created a special restomod of the Proton Saga, which celebrates its 40th birthday this week.

While retaining the iconic shape of the original Malaysian National Car, he has altered the headlights and rear lights to have a parametric pixel, adding a modern digital touch while having a link with the analogue past. The colour of the Saga 40th anniversary restomod is the same as the ‘hero colour’ of the original, though it is slightly darker than what we remember.

At a glance, it looks like the same styling but Saga fans will see that, besides the lights, there are also the following differences from the original reshaped front fender arch, antenna removed, no side strip, different grille panel, reprofiled bumpers, bigger wheels, wider tracks, simplified door handles, and simplified B-pillars and rear door frames.

1.2 million units produced
Launched on July 9, 1985, the Saga was adapted from the second generation of the Lancer Fiore of Mitsubishi Motors, which was the technical partner with HICOM in Proton. It would go on to become the longest running nameplate of the brand, with some 1.2 million units of the first generation produced over 22 years.

To date, over 2 million units of the Saga have been sold in Malaysia as well as overseas. The current generation is the third generation introduced in 2016. It continues to be Proton’s best-selling model as well as one of the top-selling models in Malaysia.

Three generations of the Proton Saga.
