At PROTON, it’s not only about making and selling cars but also being a good corporate citizen and demonstrating corporate social responsibility (CSR). One of the CSR initiatives of the Malaysian automaker is helping to raise environmental awareness by partnering with Reef Check Malaysia, a non-profit organisation focused on coral reef conservation, to remove waste material from beaches.
Second year at Morib Beach
In particular, the efforts were carried out at Morib beach in Banting, Selangor, and this is second consecutive year the company is targeting its efforts at this coastal area, which is known for its valuable marine and mangrove ecosystems.
157 volunteers
A total of 157 volunteers, comprising staff from PROTON, vendors, dealers, and bankers, helped in the clean-up. The team’s activities concentrated on the main visitor area, where they successfully cleared 468.27 kgs of waste. This included general waste, large items, tin/metal, plastic, and glass. Even small items such as plastic straws and cigarette butts were collected, enhancing the beach’s natural beauty.
The beach at Morib, about 3 kms long, is a coastal gem known for its marine and mangrove ecosystems. It will benefit significantly from the waste removal efforts, which not only contribute to a cleaner coastline but also a healthier environment.
Environmental awareness
The activity aimed to not only improve the beach’s condition but also to raise awareness about the importance of keeping coastlines clean, the role that mangrove and coastal ecosystems play in environmental conservation, as well as coaching participants on what they can do personally to reduce waste.
Aside from providing an opportunity for participants to contribute to environmental conservation, the event also emphasised teamwork between members of PROTON’s ecosystem, while reinforcing the company’s corporate values. It also served as a platform to highlight the urgent issue of marine pollution and the value of collecting data for national marine policies.
“This collaborative effort at Morib Beach truly reflects the spirit of PROTON. By taking part in community work, we are not only contributing to a healthier environment but also strengthening our sense of teamwork and responsibility. It’s in moments like these that our core values – Teamwork, Achiever, Respect, and Integrity – come to life. At PROTON, this is what it means to be part of a company that’s engaged with its community and committed to making a genuine difference,” said Ainol Azmil, Covering Deputy Chief Executive Officer of PROTON.
