‘Everything costs more nowadays’ is something you hear frequently, with price increases occurring more often than before. But here’s a rare piece of welcome news for car-buyers, specifically those who are thinking of a Perodua Axia.
The prices of the smallest model in the Perodua range have been lowered, not as a promotion but as a permanent change. The Malaysian automaker has reduced prices by RM500 to RM4,700, depending on the variant, of which there are currently four.
For benefit of customers
Like every automaker, Perodua keeps raising operational efficiency which reduces production cost and it also expects suppliers to do the same and adjust their parts prices periodically as volume rises. Some companies may keep the savings for themselves as additional profits but Perodua, as a good corporate citizen, uses them to benefit customers.
Commenting on the price changes, Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said: “The revised pricing is the outcome of sustained, continuous improvement initiatives undertaken in close collaboration with our local suppliers and partners within the automotive ecosystem.”
Additionally, the automaker has also made efforts to lower ownership costs by reducing servicing expenses. “These initiatives are part of the company’s efforts to ease economic pressures currently faced by Malaysians,” he said.
No difference in specs and quality
Assuring customers that all vehicle specifications, equipment levels, and build quality standards for the Axia, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin explained that the reductions were achieved through process optimization, reduced production waste, and close collaboration with local vendors and supply chain partners.
3-cylinder engine
The Axia comes with a proven 998 cc 3-cylinder engine with 4 valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection and variable valve timing. With a kerb weight of 865 – 890 kgs, the output of 68 ps/91 Nm should be more than enough to give decent performance. Fuel consumption is claimed to be 27.4 kms/litre (with use of ecoIdle system) so the 33-litre fuel tank should be good for over 900 kms.
High safety standards
Depending on the variant, there are up to 6 airbags around the cabin. Besides ABS, traction and stability control are standard for all variants which is a plus point for this model. Tested by ASEAN NCAP in 2023, the model was rated at 4 stars overall.
Even though this is the entry-level model of the Perodua range, the top AV version comes with Perodua Smart Drive Assist which is the automaker’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). The active safety systems help the driver to be aware of potential dangers and can also act autonomously to prevent collisions.
