MINI special editions pay tribute to motorsport heritage

Quick Look

  • The 1965 Victory Edition is powered by the JCW platform, delivering 258 hp and rally-themed appearance and priced at RM 237,188.

  • The GP Inspired Edition serves as a final-run tribute to the third-gen MINI GP, priced at RM345,988 with 231 hp and a full JCW Aero Kit.

With such a flood of models from the newer brands in the market, it seems as if the more established brands have nothing to offer. It’s actually not the case; the newer brands are just entering the market and already have many models that can be introduced and all will be new to Malaysians.

However, the existing brands have been caught in their product cycles which can be up to 5 years per generation. They can’t just ask for a change and get it, and even to ask for a new model to add to the range takes time because the manufacturer has to adjust the production schedule which may be planned a year or two in advance.

It’s only now that some of the ‘legacy brands’ are getting new generations of models but some models are also still stuck in their cycle. The other option to try to have them noticed is to do special editions and MINI Malaysia seems to be doing that.

After recently announcing limited editions of the Countryman (in collaboration with Auto Bavaria), BMW Group Malaysia now introduces 2 more limited-run variants with a historical theme.

Aimed at collectors and brand traditionalists, these are the MINI 1965 Victory Edition and the MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) GP Inspired Edition.

1965 Victory Edition
The Victory Edition is inspired by the Monte Carlo Rally victory by Timo Makinen in a Mini, an amazing feat for the little car. The agility of the Cooper S was one of the advantages on the twisty mountain roads which were also covered with snow and ice.

No all-wheel drive, no electronic assistance systems, no ABS… just sheer driving skill, bravery and the agility of the Mini on roads covered with snow and ice.

That agility became part of the Mini DNA which has carried through to the modern MINI that has ‘go-kart’ handling – even with the new fully electric powertrains.

From a technical standpoint, the limited edition model produces 190 kW (258 hp)/350 Nm from the John Cooper Works (JCW) electric powertrain.

Visually, the car is finished in Chili Red paintwork with white stripes and carries the number ‘52’ on the doors — the same number used by the original rally-winning Cooper S. It sits on 18-inch JCW Mastery Spoke wheels with floating hub caps, a premium touch rarely seen outside of the Rolls-Royce family (which is part of the BMW Group).

GP Inspired Edition
While the global enthusiast community still speaks of the 2021 MINI GP as the most hardcore roadgoing MINI to date, that model’s 2-seater configuration and stiff setup were often a deterrent for daily use.

The GP Inspired Edition attempts to bridge that gap. It retains the 5-seat practicality of the standard JCW hatch but inherits the aggressive Racing Grey metallic livery and aero components of the original GP.

Under the bonnet is the familiar 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine, tuned to produce 231 hp/380 Nm. Although it faces a challenge from rivals like the Volkswagen Golf R and Honda Civic Type R (FL5), the MINI’s appeal remains its compact dimensions and the specific ‘GP’ image, including the JCW Rear Spoiler and a full set of front, side, and rear winglets that aren’t typically found on the standard JCW.

Value Proposition
For those buying these limited editions, it’s all about primarily about exclusivity and potential resale preservation. History shows that GP and limited-anniversary MINIs tend to hold their value better than standard Cooper S variants on the secondary market.

The MINI 1965 Victory Edition is priced at RM230,888 (RM237,188 with the Extended Warranty and Service package). The MINI JCW GP Inspired Edition is over a hundred thousand ringgit more at RM333,888 (RM345,988 with the full support package).
