It used to be that once you got a new car, the features in it were all you would get and if you wanted newer features available in a facelift, you would have to replace your car with the newer one. Over-The-Air – ot OTA – updates have changed that and owners can enjoy new features without getting a new car.
OTA update services, available on most models today, is possible thanks to wireless broadband which provides connectivity for your smartphone wherever you are. Cars now also have the connectivity so they can receive the updates over the air, with installation done automatically – just like the updates for your smartphone apps.
OTA services keep the car ‘fresh’
OTA services also make it unnecessary to go to the service centre when there is a software update. This is usually to improve the system’s performance or address an issue. The manufacturers periodically release OTA updates that can be received by the cars and installed. Thus the car remains ‘fresh’ for a longer period.
The latest OTA update package for the Leapmotor C10 is a good example of how this service is of great value to owners of the EV which was launched in October 2024 in Malaysia. The OTA Update package (LeapOS 3.40.32) is a significant one which enhances existing features as well as adds new ones, improving functionality, safety and the user experience.
The enhancements include expanding the driving recorder capabilities to use the built-in 360° camera to record the vehicle’s surroundings, with added modes for authorising continuous video loops and activating emergency recordings for enhanced peace of mind.
Drivers now rely greatly on GPS route navigation systems to find their way to destinations. With the OTA update, the C10’s navigation system now has Bahasa Melayu as an option, certainly something that will be appreciated by Malaysians. The language is available for both on-screen displays as well as voice instructions.
For enhanced driving safety, the update brings improved driver distraction and fatigue monitoring, upgraded Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Centering Control (LCC) operability of up to 160 km/h, along with refined cornering plus deceleration with the LCC and ACC in operation. Drivers can now access and customise the ADAS and driving modes via the updated steering wheel buttons.
The update also refines the existing slope detection feature that automatically activates the front camera on inclines or declines to give drivers a clearer, blind-spot-free view. This is complemented by an improved stationary holding ability on hilly terrains to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards.
To provide greater connectivity, the latest OS update now includes QDLink functionality, giving the driver the ability to seamlessly mirror their mobile device on the central infotainment display. This allows direct access to key mobile applications such as streaming, navigation, and music. The feature is available via a conventional wireless connection or through a data cable.
