HAVAL H6 HEV sets ASEAN Record with 1,242 kms on a single tank

In the 1970s and early 1980s, fuel economy runs were popular and companies organised them for the public as well as the media to highlight the fuel efficiency of their cars. Today, most cars are fairly fuel-efficient so the matter is not really highlighted. Instead, attention has now turned to the range of electrified vehicles.

This is something of much interest to motorists as there is ‘range anxiety’ where the fear of running out of electricity in the battery pack – and not finding a charging station – is a discouraging factory. Nevertheless, the ranges are getting longer as battery technology advances.

For those who want to make a partial transition to electric mobility, there are also hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs. These have been around the since early 2000s and the technology can be considered mature.

With a HEV, you don’t have to worry about looking for a charging station since an on-board generator recharges the battery while on the move. It’s almost like a combustion-engined car except that there is an electric motor also working together with the engine. This means that less fuel is consumed since the engine does not work 100% (sometimes not at all) and a full tank can take you much further.

Setting an ASEAN record
GWM Malaysia recently showed just how much further with its locally-assembled HAVAL H6 HEV which achieved the longest single-tank distance and most verified owners exceeding 1,000 kms. The achievement is now listed among the ASEAN Records and is the first time a hybrid SUV in ASEAN has accomplished such a feat through genuine, everyday usage.

The record-setting range was achieved during a nationwide fuel endurance challenge, with 38 owners of the SUV exceeding the 100-km distance. The longest verified distance was 1,242 kms on a full tank which has a volume of 60 litres, which works out to 20.7 kms/litre. Officially, the claim is 17.2 kms/litre so owners should be able to get something in between those two figures, depending on how they drive and the driving conditions.

The fuel efficiency is also impressive considering that the output of the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine is 243 ps/530 Nm. In the past, such a power level would mean higher consumption but thanks to the HEV system, much less fuel is used.

“This isn’t just a technical breakthrough; it’s a real-world endorsement of how far the HAVAL H6 HEV can take Malaysians,” said Cui Anqi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia. “It reflects the essence of our new direction: to elevate the everyday drive through proven innovation.”

Elevate Your Everyday
With this record, GWM Malaysia introduces a new brand line for the HAVAL H6 HEV — Elevate Your Everyday. This positioning marks a new chapter in how the HEV is experienced: offering longer range, hybrid performance, premium comfort, and advanced technology. The company says it is a promise to uplift the standards of what a modern SUV can deliver.

The ASEAN recognition also supports a shift in focus from traditional fuel efficiency to true fuel endurance. With a range of over 1,000 kms possible, the H6 HEV offers more than just savings; it also offers greater range, reliability, and road confidence.
