FedEx adds 41 EVs to its Malaysian fleet

With online shopping having surged greatly since the pandemic period, deliveries of goods by transport companies have also increased significantly. This increase has meant running more vehicles to meet demand – which can also mean more exhaust emissions.

However, many companies now have commitments towards sustainable and green logistics operations. Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), one of the world’s largest express transportation companies with a huge vehicle fleet, has made such a commitment to reduce vehicle emissions across the its expansive global network, including air operations.

On land and even in the air, FedEx aims to cut vehicle emissions to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040.

Aiming for carbon-neutral operations
In Malaysia, FedEx supports Malaysia’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (2021–2030) with sustainability journey that will contribute to achieving FedEx’s goal of carbon-neutral operations by 2040.

In Malaysia, as in many other countries, FedEx is replacing its existing combustion engine vehicles with EVs. The company aims to have an all-electric fleet by 2040.

Demonstrating this commitment, the company now has acquired 41 new Maxus e-Deliver 3 fully electric vans. Each van has a 920-kg load capacity and an estimated range of up to 228 kms on a full charge.

Over a period of one year of running, the vehicles are estimated to collectively avoid generating up to 305 metric tonnes (when compared to the diesel-powered vans they replace) of carbon dioxide which is the ‘greenhouse gas’ that causes global warming.

These are not first EVs in the FedEx Malaysia fleet as the company introduced its first two EVs in the Klang Valley in May 2023.

The zero-emission EVs will be used for parcel pick-up and delivery services across key Malaysian cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, Penang and the Klang Valley. To support the electric fleet, FedEx installed 41 charging stations at strategic locations nationwide earlier this year. The company aims to have an all-electric fleet by 2040.

“This latest EV fleet expansion is a meaningful step forward in embedding sustainability into our day-to-day operations. It reflects our belief that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, and we’re proud to be part of the collective effort toward a low-carbon future in Malaysia,” said Tien Long Woon, Managing Director of FedEx Malaysia.
