BYD Zhengzhou car-carrier makes first visit to Port Klang

With BYD’s global sales having grown rapidly over the past few years to make it among the largest vehicle exporters from China, the automaker has its own fleet of ships to deliver its vehicles to other markets. By next year, it will have 8 ships (one of which is the largest car-carrier in the world) which will be able to send a total of over 1 million vehicles annually to more than 100 countries and regions.

First visit to Southeast Asia
BYD’s ships stop at various ports to off-load vehicle and recently, the carrier vessel BYD Zhengzhou arrived at Port Klang, Selangor to deliver a large volume of vehicles. The RORO (roll-on/roll-off) vessel, which can carry up to 7,000 vehicles, was making its first journey to Southeast Asia. Other ports on its journey are in the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, before returning to China.

“As China’s automotive exports increase, so does demand for specialised carriers. By investing in our own fleet of vessels, we’re in a more secure position to manage global demand and critical transport resources through superior delivery stability and scale,” said Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

“The carrier vessel plays a key role in heightening BYD’s global ambition and reinforces our ties to Malaysia which we view as instrumental to our growth in Asia Pacific. Built to enhance delivery capabilities, the BYD Zhengzhou ensures faster and more reliable deliveries directly to our customers here,” he said.

Greater control over supply chain
The BYD Zhengzhou is the seventh vessel in a fleet of purpose-built carriers which are vital elements in BYD’s expanding export strategies. By operating its own shipping fleet, the automaker has greater control over an integral aspect of the supply chain (especially for its EVs).

“This is a significant milestone in our partnership with BYD, symbolising confidence and the growing potential of Malaysia as a vital EV hub. With the enhanced regional supply chain provided by the BYD carrier vessel, we are now assured of shorter delivery times, enabling us to provide better customer satisfaction, making this a win-win situation for all involved,” said Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors, Southeast Asia, which is BYD distributor in Malaysia and Singapore (via Vantage Automotive Ltd Singapore).

“This also prepares us to support greater volumes ahead, as we accelerate EV adoption in Malaysia through a dynamic ecosystem that spans retail, aftersales and customer education as we make the shift towards cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable mobility. This is just the beginning, with more breakthrough innovations and strategic developments ahead,” he added.
