With EVs growing in numbers, motorists are talking more about batteries but the batteries in EVs (also hybrid EVs) for powering the electric motors are different and larger. Nevertheless, EVs also use the small 12V battery to power essential functions and millions of other vehicles on the roads also have the battery that has been a standard item in motor vehicles for over 100 years.
The small cubic container stores electricity which is needed to crank the engine and start the combustion process so the engine can run on its own. It also powers other things around the car when the engine is not running, like the lights, audio system and door locks, among others.

When batteries die
Over time, the battery (typically with lead-acid chemistry) loses its storage capacity. The lifespan is not fixed and sometimes, if you’re unlucky, it can be ‘dead’ within a year, or it might last a few years.
Usually, the first signs of the ‘death’ approaching are when the cranking is slow or seems to struggle. It’s a characteristic that worries experienced drivers who know what’s going to happen. Sometimes, there is no warning – you get into the car after dinner, press the button (or turn the key) and there’s that dreaded ‘click-click…’ and the engine refuses to start.
Fortunately, the matter is relatively easy to solve as you just get a new battery and connect it. It’s a task that many motorists can even do themselves (just take the precautions with the cables). But the problem often is that you may be far from a battery shop and sometimes, you may have no choice but to call for a towing service.

These days, there are also companies which can send someone with a battery to where you are (assuming you’re not in some very ulu area) and replace the battery for you. Unless you have one of those advanced hybrid electric vehicles which have more specialised and powerful batteries, you can generally get a replacement battery even though there are numerous types.
Operating in 11 states
The leader in this aftermarket battery business is BateriHub, which was established in 2011. It has the largest direct-owned battery retail network in the country with 200 branches. As of early 2026, BateriHub’s reach extends to over 500 service areas, including regions such as Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan where roadside assistance was previously limited. BateriHub now provides an unprecedented level of support to Malaysian motorists across 11 states, serving more than 1 million customers.

The company’s rapid rise has been fueled by its 100% direct-owned operating model. Unlike conventional franchises, this approach grants BateriHub total control over service quality, pricing consistency, and brand standards. Kok Wai Kit, co-founder and managing director, emphasizes that at this scale, the priority shifts from mere speed to ensuring service excellence holds steady during peak demand.
“Running a direct-owned network allows us to train people the same way, deploy technicians faster, and keep decision-making close to operations. Crossing 200 stores matters because it widens access to dependable help, not because of the number alone,” he said.
Added Wong Wai Loong, also co-founder and managing director: “Reaching 200 branches is not the result of one strategy or one team. It is the outcome of logistics, operations, technicians, customer service, and support teams all moving in the same direction over many years. The focus now is not just to grow bigger, but to grow better, in quality, sustainability, and people development.”

Expansion plans
Looking ahead, BateriHub is preparing to bridge the gap between Peninsular and East Malaysia with a planned entry into Sabah and Sarawak by the third quarter of 2026. This move is part of a broader 5-year strategic roadmap that includes exploring the Singapore market and other regional opportunities.
