Volvo Car Malaysia has made history at the 2026 Malaysia Effie Awards as the first automotive brand in the annual event’s history to receive an exclusive Gold Effie and sweeping top honours.
The Swedish automaker (part of the Geely Group) also won the Grand Effie for its ‘Selamat is Volvo’ campaign alongside the coveted Brand of the Year title. Following the Grand Effie victory, the campaign is now eligible for consideration on the global Effies stage.
Besides the Gold in the David vs. Goliath (Situational) category, a Bronze in Automotive – Vehicles, and a Finalist placement in Multicultural – Products.

Running since 1968, the Effie Awards represent the global benchmark for marketing effectiveness since 1968. Recognized across 50 countries. Organized by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia alongside key industry partners, the awards evaluate marketing campaigns based on real-world results rather than creative design alone. The competition honours insightful strategies and outstanding executions that deliver proven commercial success.
Campaign built on cultural connection
The award-winning campaign launched earlier this year by subverting standard industry promotion. Rather than advertising feature lists or technical specifications, Volvo started off with a teaser for a ‘new’ car brand called ‘Selamat’. Camouflaged vehicles, unbranded digital displays, and speculative social media coverage built national curiosity before revealing that ‘Selamat’ was not a new competitor, but a renewal of Volvo’s long-standing safety promise to Malaysian drivers.
While ‘selamat’ serves as a universal daily greeting, its literal translation means safety — which also brings to the high number of road accidents as a primary cause of death and injuries.

By linking its corporate identity to the local term, the campaign generated a 90.8% measurable response rate, effectively positioning road safety as a shared cultural value rather than a simple regulatory mandate.
Linked to the brand’s foundation
The core premise of the ‘Selamat’ narrative relies on a foundation the brand has built over nearly a century. Founded in 1927, Volvo Cars built its global reputation primarily through pioneering advancements in automotive safety.

One of the best examples is the 3-point seatbelt in 1959 which both its inventor (an engineer in the company named Nils Bohlin) and Volvo chose not to patent. This was partly attributed to the Scandinavian attitude towards humanity, and Volvo exemplified this attitude through its decision to make the 3-point seatbelt concept available to all automakers for free. The approach to safety reflected the broader Scandinavian philosophy of not thinking about commercial gain and placing greater importance on human welfare.
Developed in Malaysia
The ‘Selamat’ campaign was developed in Malaysia and involved a collaborative agency roster made up of Invictus Blue, Grey Malaysia, Dox Digital, LAB Activations, Directors Think Tank, and Live Experience. Media strategies relied on organic debate and multi-channel teasers, paired with real-world activities like the Selamat Drive at Sepang and public displays of the Selamat Crash Car.

Reflecting on the campaign’s core philosophy, Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said: “In a competitive market where every brand claim advanced technology, safety risks becoming just another feature – spoken about, but rarely felt. The objective of ‘Selamat’ was never about making noise, but about placing human life back at the absolute core of mobility. To receive this level of recognition from the Effies is deeply humbling. It shows that when you approach an audience with genuine cultural empathy, that emotional connection naturally translates into meaningful, lasting impact.”
Continuation of ‘Volvo for Life’
Moving forward, Volvo Car Malaysia plans to maintain ‘Selamat’ as a long-term thematic platform, integrating the concept into upcoming driver education initiatives and community safety programs across the country. It epitomises the brand’s core philosophy of ‘Volvo for Life’, providing safe transportation throughout the lives of those who travel in a Volvo.
